I'm just in the TK lounge at IST (this thing is huge! The photos don't do it justice) and noticed a lady walking around doing shoulder/neck massages when a chap came up and asked how much it was. Upon being told free he asked how much he should tip which got me thinking - a lot of us use the QF F lounge and TG F lounge and get massages etc.

Have you ever offered a tip? If not, why not? If yes, why?

Australians do not generally tip.

I have read on AFF some people have given a tip for the massage at the SYD F lounge but I would be hesitant as I am not too sure how it would be interpreted.

I would.. just to be appreciative for the general service = 10 Euros, or a box of Lindt Chocolates. :D
Though could be contested..

I travel and work a lot in Nth America so am very comfortable with the tipping thing - in Nth America and elsewhere where tipping makes up for subsistance wages in many service sectors.

I have never even thought of tipping in the QF spa and would strongly discourage it in others.

* Pay scales are better (I'm not saying luxurious, or couldn't be more, but they are not designed around being supplements by tips)
* I think it may be embarrassing for the (skilled/professional) recipient ('gee, that guy thinks I'm poor'; or 'that guy equates me to a kid serving in a restaurant or a bellhop in a hotel')
* It would be embarrassing for me - if I tipped too much or too little, i'm a dork.

I left a $10 tip after having a long appointment in the Flounge Spa earlier this year. The attendant was very personable and deserving of the tip.
