Tigerair Australia has joined its arch-rival, Jetstar, in cracking down on passengers who do not toe the line with its carry-on baggage rules.
Australia's second-largest budget airline will introduce stricter measures for carry-on baggage from September 18 after warning passengers for the past eight months about not exceeding its limits.
Tiger allows passengers to carry a maximum of two bags free of charge provided they do not have a combined weight of more than 10 kilograms.
Tiger commercial director Adam Rowe said the airline had been encouraging passengers to adhere to the baggage allowances since the start of the year by positioning extra staff at departure gates to issue warnings to people who exceeded the carry-on limits.
"From now on we are simply asking all passengers to play by the rules as there will be increased monitoring and the risk of a penalty charge for those that ignore them," he said.
"We urge passengers to make sure they book the right amount of baggage in advance of their journey at the time of booking, or after booking via manage my booking on our webpage, to avoid any extra fees at check in."

JQ had started a few weeks back at SYD, an announcement was made that everyone better double check carryon size and weight before boarding started (there was no sign of enforcement beyond this though in terms of the supposed patrol officers)... my better half was asked to put his carry-on into the guide which was quite embarassing given he was singled out in front of the whole gate especially since his bag was a regulation sized Tumi rollaboard!

the things you do for $35 SYD-OOL fares...

Pity all the airlines don't do this, someone should start a company to outsource this to. Like shopping centres/carparks so the company can say "it wasn't us" while others do the dirty work.

I love watching the Airline show where you see someone with a $29 fare stuffing their entire life into a extendable Reject Shop LV rip off roller bag and then swearing black and blue that they don't have the money, credit card, bank card etc to check it in and how the airline is ruining their life. Im guessing if you cant pony up $25 in an emergency then your life is pretty screwed to begin with so do the public a favour, stay home.

Hmmm. I seemed to have had a soap box moment. Must be Friday!

Every time I've been on Tiger, they've weighed my carry on. and that was before the CASA grounding.
Only been on JQ once, and I didn't see any JQ staff until I got to the gate (and they were more concerned about changing my QF stock boarding pass to JQ stock)

Still amazed at some of the bags people try stuff into overhead bins on mainline carriers.
