Cairns are still keen to get international flights:

Cairns MP Mr King seized on Mr David’s comments in Friday’sThe Cairns Post about the Singapore possibility."I’m keen to explore Cairns-Singapore and Cairns-China direct," he said.
Mr King said the Government’s Aviation Attraction Fund was designed to entice airlines to international ports such as Cairns.
He said one scenario was bringing in packaged tours from China on a Tiger Singapore flight to connect with Tiger’s domestic network.
Mr David said Tiger would require "support" from the airport, tourism bodies and the State Government.

I wonder how CX would feel if they lost any packaged tours they're bringing in already. I'm surprised Cairns hasn't talked to (and I forgot exactly which it is) China Southern/Eastern/who knows, the airline planning to fly into the Gold Coast in the future. They could do a similar job to CX by splitting flights between OOL and CNS.

They have/are continuing to chat....

It would be Tiger Singapore operating ex SIN, but the current A320 cannot make it.

A320 NEO sure can make it. Tiger rumored to order again soon.

They would route via DRW I imagine, picking up the JQ dropped frequency.

That sounds fun, A320 SIN-DRW-CNS-Your next destination :p

That’s sure to make people come back and fly them again… it’s not like other LCC’s aren’t flying A330’s direct right ;)

SIN-DRW-CNS gets to pick up the tourists on the outback and reef trail, and the cruise ship connects as well.

Or they could just talk to Scoot about non-stop SIN-CNS flights. If SIN-DRW-CNS was such a great earner, JQ probably wouldn't have cut its frequency.

Let's not forget QF operated a 767 on that route, then went to LCC ops with Australian, then JQ, at least Tiger has only one flavor. Personally I wished DJ operated on the CNS DRW route for selfish reasons.

I don't recall that Australian was really an LCC - more of a full service leisure airline. A model that maybe didn't work so well!

LCC as is no premium cabin or services. The route has not had J since.

So QantasLink is an LCC?

Australian included meal services etc....

In many ways yes, no priority boarding, no IFE, no premium cabin, outsourced crew are hallmarks of a LCC, its a pretty wide definition these days.

I think markis10 may have been implying that the QantasLink flights CNS-DRW are usually operated by B717's - no J class on them. But I personally would take a QFLink 717 over a JQ A320 or a Tiger A320 anyday!

I hope the new leadership at state and local levels will reinvigorate Cairns. Go Bob Manning!

Tiger have started advertising quite aggressively on the radio lately too.

Lets hope if it does come about its direct not via DRW, that layover was ridiculous think the JQ was early morning about 4 hours!.

It shouldn't upset CX they have the direct CNS/HKG all to themselves (so to SIN makes no difference), Y is about $1300 and J is only $7,500 but you do get a 7 hour flight!. So any airline please bring back some competition.

Its known Cairns is talking to various overseas airlines, and it sure needs regular flights from mainland China too as the economy is not good, has one of the highest unemployment rates in Qld. It needs a kick start so bring it on Tiger or anyone else.

Of course we have our own international terminal (to be patched up this year), what a dump, I often wonder what 1st arrival passengers think.

It's better than the impression they get when they walk out of Cairns Central and see the "locals" at the Railway!
