Tiger Australia is catching up with the rest of the world and embracing the low cost model but it still lags behind other Asia Pacific regions, the boss of Tiger Airways Australia has said. Compared to markets like India – which has eight low cost airlines – the local industry is under represented, Shelley Roberts said.
“Australia is the fourth largest domestic market in Asia Pacific and one of the least fragmented,” Roberts said.
Australia is “starting to behave like the rest of the world” but there is room for more players, she stated. Roberts vowed Tiger would not introduce lounges, strike interline
deals or chase the premium market as it would drive up prices.
We are single minded,” she said.
“We have turned a seat into a box
of cornflakes. It’s a commodity.
Domestic airfares have decreased by 23 per cent since Tiger came to Australia.”

I can't see how we could be compared to the Indian market as low cost travel there would be a luxury for most of the population not to mention the much larger population.

And the comment "We have turned a seat into a box
of cornflakes. It’s a commodity."
Just shows how they consider their customers. No wonder they don't worry about customer service.
Finally how long will people tolerate being treated like cattle by these low cost airlines. And are they low cost. By the time you add baggage, a meal/drink and IFE, it is sometimes about the same as a full service carrier.

There is a place for LCC in the industry, but the main problem/concern for complaints is that pax still don't understand you only get what you pay for and that's only a seat..nothing else.

And I don't believe any of those 8 Indian airlines are profitable
Just what we need another 7 unprofitable airlines in Aus - just like Tiger!

And the Indian are merging
- Air India / Indian Airlines
- Kingfisher / Deccan (now Kingfisher Red)
- Jet / Sahara (failed)

If people only want to pay what it costs to be treated by cattle what is wrong with that? And who needs a meal, drink and IFE on a 35-60 minute flight anyway (such as MEL-SYD/CBR/LST/HBA/ADL).

Here in Singapore you can catch a bus to KL - about 6 hrs or so away. You can pay very little money and be "treated like cattle" squeezed into a coach with few creature comforts, or you can pay more to travel in "business class" type seats, 2 across and with in-trip-entertainment and refreshments served. Why should flying be any different?

I think the problem is expectations do not match the price paid. In my mind, there's really five classes of travel, First, Business, Economy Plus, Economy and Economy Minus (generally, but not always, the domain of the LCC's). The sooner people realise what Economy Minus is all about the better!!

Pax need to be educated on how, when, where, why, and at what kind of fares to use LCCs.

Contrary to popular believes, I did have full service airline treatment a while
ago with Tiger in SIN, that was a flight SIN=>DRW=>MEL (axed already).

A storm closed DRW airport, we were bused to a 4 star hotel in SIN,
and given full dinner and accomodation for a night.... ;)

dajop, were you talking about transtar first class KUL<=>SIN ?
I tried them and they are really good, however some IBE (In bus entertainment) does have problems....

When I saw the thread title I thought "Tiger Australia" is (finally ) catching up with the rest of the world. Alas not to be.

I agree about describing LCCs as Economy Minus and it will always have it's supporters. Unfortunately the people using LCCs do not do enough research before travelling and don't realise that you really get what you pay for on LCCs.

Yeh, have seen them but haven't tried them. Tempting to give it a go just the once, after all SIN-KL via Changi/Sepang still takes a while ..... Not so concerned about the IBE, but am the advertised wifi, wonder how good that is?

um... I wonder if the wifi will work on the bus,
Transtar first class is really good..

their 1+1 per row is awesome !
the food is a bit hit and miss....

about 20-30% of the IBE doesn't work, if they do
they are awesome, similar to airlines...

All the seats have lots of recline, similar to J seats,
all have power sockets...

the best point is that they use the second link, which is much
faster....

Of course we're way OT again, but what's AFF with going OT??? Thats' good to know, one of the things putting me off was the border crossing.
