My DH and I were booked in PE on a Y+ special MEL-HKG on 26 November Y MEL-SYD, Y+ SYD-HKG. Having just transited through SYD on the way to Japan the week before we realised that we probably had made a mistake allowing the system to book us on a 1.5 hour trf time in SYD and had called QF a couple of days prior to travel to see if we could move onto an earlier flight to give us more leeway in case of delay to make our connection to QF127. Phone staff said NP but $140 each way and the connection is legal so not to worry about it.

Sure enough, bad weather in Mel on Thurs as has been reported elsewhere here, our flight is delayed and to cut a long story short despite the fact that at least 9 people were booked to travel on QF127 from our MEL-SYD flight we were told prior to landing that we would not make the flight (landed at 11.30am, flight scheduled to depart at midday) and to see staff at transfer desks to find out what would happen next.

Now I know all of the above doesnt sound good but apart from the $140 to make a change that might benefit all the delay certainly wasn't QF's fault.

So I was imagining we would be rerouted through BNE or put on CX but to my horror we were all told that there were no seats on any flights and that everyone would be put up in a hotel and would fly the next day on QF127. I have to say the staff handled the VERY disgruntled passengers very well, they were polite but firm and listed to everyone but at the end of the day again what could they do. They had asked for the plane to be held but ops had denied that, again while many of the pax didnt seem to understand I did, and no point yelling at them, what could they do?

There was one guy who was only transiting through HKG so he he was rerouted to get to his final destination and eventually all the other pax were sorted out, most I think went off to the Mercure with vouchers and would have travelled the next day.

I explained that we had meetings scheduled all the next day in HKG and were then travelling on to PVG so if we couldnt travel that day there was no point going and could they just reroute us to PVG directly. The staff member spent quite some time tapping on her computer and phoning and managed to get us on the MEL-HKG flight that night (which was overbooked) in J. So back to Mel we went and then spent a marathon 8 hours or so in QC (where they also looked after us bringing us food etc, I think they felt sorry for us!) and flew in skybeds to HKG that night and managed to make all of our meetings.

While it was all very exhausting I felt that a bad situation was handled well and given that all alternate flights were fully booked the outcome was good for us in that in the end we acheived what we needed to achieve which was to make all of our meetings.

Now sitting in the Pier waiting for our KA flight to PVG on which we have also been op-upped to J (Discount Y tickets on this one).

FYI, in case you are wondering, we are both QG.

Cheers

Very nice to hear the outcome. SG you mean? instead of QG? I assume :)

Good work!

Sounds like a difficult situation but outcome was reasonable (although far from ideal) in the end.

Yes, you have to wonder sometimes when you present a solution in advance........

Good outcome.

Yeah, despite the fact that 1.5hr is considered a legal transit in SYD, rarely do I risk it. I'd rather spend 3 to 4 hours sitting around at the QP in T1 rather than risk missing the (oftan one and only) flight out.

Thumbs up for Qantas! Lucky for you that you weren't flying with a LCC!
