Hi
I have an upcoming flight on QF MEL-SIN and a separate SIN-MAA flight on 9W. The QF flight is in Y and 9W in J. They are on different PNRs and are a return trip.
My question is will I be able to check my bags through all the way to MAA or do I have to check in again at SIN? Transit time is only 3 hours.
Some FTs at the QF forum have mentioned that QF wont check my bags through as its on different PNRs. I don't want to clear immigration and collect bags and re-check them at SIN.
I would rather just visit the SATS lounge at T3 and have a shower instead.

Qantas won't through check bags on separate tickets.

Three hours is a long time for transit in Singapore, however, I believe you can just go to a transfer counter and they will take care of collecting and reckecking your bags for you. No need to clear immigration.

No issues with through check, if there is then the transfer desk will assist in most cases

I'm not sure through check would be honoured in this case given 2 PNRs, non-OW carrier (9W) and 9W flight not on QF code

Correct, I was thinking of 3K not jet, no through check.

But isn't 9W an airline partner of QF? So through check in should be possible with partners right?
I have had similar experience with Virgin and SQ - Virgin checked my bags on to SQ on separate PNRs (Virgin was domestic)

Had a similar situation last year with 9W in SG.
Immigration, collect your bags, go upstairs and check in, back thru immigration.

This is a quick and easy task, I did this because I had work items that I needed to make sure came with me to MAA, otherwise you can try the transfer desk and see if they work.

JohnK did this when I flew with him to make sure his golf clubs got on the next flight. Singapore is such an efficient and easy airport that doing things the long way is not an issue.

Cheers
BF

usually for other airlines, QF is a little strict though only interlining to OW carriers and Jetstar or codeshare partners when you're on QF code

exactly!

It's not because QF can't interline the bags, the proactively decline to do so.

The policy for separate pnrs is to only interline bags to One World member airlines or EK (excludes JQ). They will through check bags to any airline as long as there is an interline agreement when all flights are in the same pnr.

That's their policy & is frequently becoming the policy of other airlines as well eg UA.

that may be the case. But why should I fly QF-9W when I could fly a YY-9W combo that will through check bags?

Unfortunately QF can't always be relied upon to through check bags when OW carriers are involved. This means you might be asked to collect bags in SYD, pay for your own transport to the international terminal, and possibly miss your connecting flight. You need to stand firm if this happens.

If on separate tickets people should allow plenty of time to transfer anyway. The extra 30 mins that must be allowed (need to factor in 30+ mins for airside transfer anyway) to collect luggage and do landside transfer should be factored in.

the issue is on the very short MEL-SYD-xx_ connections offered by QF, and where QF's policy is to through check to other QF and OW flights.

Rather than through check bags, QF may insist you collect bags in SYD, then make your way to the international terminal by train, then check-in again. There is the real risk you will miss your flight.

If the QF-9W combo is same pnr they will through check as it's all on the same ticket. If the flights are booked separately it's not really a 'combo' but two separate tickets sold in isolation.

If the airline can't view or have access to the other ticket on the connecting airline then it can be a nightmare in the event of a disruption as the outbound carrier can't reissue the ticket for the new flights booked.

Same for separate JQ bookings as made via the JQ site it's ticketless but via the QF site there's a ticket number.

The Icelandic volcano eruption a few years ago was a classic example of that & a contributing factor to the current policy.

I accept QF has their reasons. But other airlines are more than happy to take my money and interline bags on a separate ticket.

When faced with an airline that will, and an airline that won't, if other things are equal (food, seats, schedule) then I know which airline gets my money. WHy would you choose to fly an airline that makes you collect your bags and recheck, when you could be in the lounge having a shower?

If such MEL-SYD-xx_ are "offered" by Qantas and booked through Qantas or TA on the same PNR, regardless of who the end carrier is they will through check bags and you can use.

If you choose to book MEL-SYD on QF and make a complete separate booking on a different carrier to get to YYY, that is not, in IMHO, something that QF is "offering". That is something entirely up to you.

unfortunately not.

MEL-SYD-xx_ on QF (single ticket), connecting to OneWorld, and agents have said they will not through check bags and to collect them in SYD.

QF staff were unwilling to through check because a OW partner was involved at the end.

This has been discussed before on here, with several examples. I raised it only as a reminder to people that if they are faced by this they need to stand their ground.

When you say QF 'will' though check - that is only their stated policy. Unfortunately not all agents are willing to accept that policy.

The ones I have read about related to either
1) people through checking on separate tickets to a OW carrier - which is allowed under QF policy, but it seems not all that well known by check in agents all the time., or
2) Application of baggage allowance on itineraries like this.

Haven't heard of not allowing through checking on same to ticket.

This is infact my first ever international flight on QF and even this is ticketed on EK.
Now I understand why QF are at loss and their share prices tumbling!
I have done similar connections on different PNRs several times on different carriers.
Usual trips in the past have been on MH-9W on different PNRs and the check-in agents always through check. They just have to manually add the connection (yes it takes a bit longer at check-in), but thats about it. I have never been refused through check in.
I think given the circumstances, I will collect my bags at SIN and re-check in if QF refuse to through check. Hopefully QF don't delay the flight and I have enough transit time at SIN.

It doesn't matter what airline issued the ticket ie EK or QF ticket stock, the issue is that it's no longer QF policy to through check bags to non OneWorld carriers eg 9W irrespective of whether your ticket has the prefix 081 (QF) or 176 (EK).

That's irrelevant as you're comparing apples with oranges. You have never been refused the through check of luggage before because you happened to have been flying on airlines who have through checked to other carriers whether on the same pnr or not.

You're effectively saying that because Malaysian have always through checked baggage before on separate pnrs then QF should as well???

That's the risk you take with separate pnrs. As others have mentioned upthread, on arrival in SIN go to the transfer desk and ask them nicely if they would min retagging your bags on to the 9W flight.

It's not a question of QF refusing to do it but upholding their policy of only through checking backs to onward flights in separate pnrs if the connecting airline is a One World member airline which excludes 9W.
