*yawn*. It's an ad. Oh! You mean we should all get excited because in Nov we'll get to see the ad. Sorry but I've got a life.

Well if it was actually filmed in flight then it might be the first movie ever to feature a scene onboard an aircraft where engine/aerodynamic noise is actually an issue.

Vaguely ironic that for a film made with apparently significant support from Virgin that there's only one 'aircraft' (presumably CGI) in the preview/trailer - yet it appears to be a MD-80/MD-90 family member, which none of the Virgin airlines have operated.

FYI 6.11.12 is 11 June 2012, during the LA Film Festival, not November.

The 777 VA bar is there!

Presumably the movie was filmed with the very-high end HD camcorder type of equipment, so that wouldn't exactly be bulky, but even so it must have been difficult to not annoy paying pax when filming a movie in flight.

Although I guess there's enough empty movements going on across the Virgin group that if you're flexible enough with your schedule you'd be able to jump on board a positioning flight and grab a few scenes.

Hello (future) global alliance somethingy!

Good name - Virgin Skies. I like it.

Reminds me of a thread I started / was part of here about a year ago - Virgin Atmosphere (my frequent flyer concept that never was) but still could be for this future alliance as more of a recognition program on top of the individual FFP's.

Nope - there's a shot of the camera in the trailer, and it's a Canon C300.

Interesting cast - Ben Feldman (who's star is rising fast now that he's in Mad Men), Philip Baker Hall, Luis Guzman, Janeane Garofalo.

My impression is that it's not an ad, but a film (some sort of drama) shot on the aircraft - I'd imagine Fruitcake is right, it has the distinction of being the first feature or short film (I assume) to actually be shot on a moving aircraft and not a set - hence the 35,000 miles in the air thing. I'd be surprised if any of Up in the Air was actually shot in the air at all - and with good reason. Presumably using a DSLR-sized movie camera some of these issues are less significant.

So either there's a significant amount of product placement and/or it's a co-branded production with the Virgins - but not an ad for them. A step beyond the product placement deal AA had for Up in the Air. I'm not against that sort of thing at all, anything that goes beyond the studio model for raising finance is all a step in the right direction.

Having another look (goodness knows why) but one of the other shots is of the VA 777 J seat with the new "business socks" fabric pattern. But there's other shots of the VA PE seats in leather, rather than the new fabric. So it was apparently filmed on at least a couple of different aircraft.

Departure Date: Short film

Not sure if this is a repost, but I just spotted this while tooling around on the Virgin Atlantic website. It's an interesting concept for a short... filming a movie on an actual commercial flight & not upsetting the passengers too much in the process. It seems like the sort of thing that should be shared, and I couldn't find an existing thread.

Ah. Thanks djfuzz. I did look, but obviously my AFF searching foo needs some work. Do I mark this thread for deletion or attract a mods attention somehow now?

Re: Departure Date: Short film

Am I the only one that smells some form of formal Virgin alliance brewing from this marketing endeavour? The website etc seems about far more than just the movie.

Re: Departure Date: Short film

It was on the inflight Galaxy Tabs a few months ago. I watched it - not a bad movie really.

It's pretty formulaic, but mercifully short. I'd put it in the Art house category

I'm not sure how much more of an alliance there could reasonably be?

Mutual lounge access? TICK
Mutual earn and burn? TICK
Mutual status recognition? TICK
Mutual status earn? TICK
Mutual marketing efforts? TICK
Codesharing? TICK

I'm not sure what else is left give the limited extent the networks cross over with each other?

This could be why the JB is so opposed to joining *A. See post #9 in the merged thread.
