Thoughts on Qantas 20% off Classic Reward Flights?

If I'm going to Europe from ADL, still more economical to book a direct OW award on someone like CX, rather than doubling back via SYD/MEL on QF.

You can book an award seat direct on an EK flight, but you won't get the 20% discount on that or on a OW partner award.

The copayments on EK redemptions are ridiculous though, compared to the very reasonable copayment on CX redemptions.

If I'm reading the T&C correctly, you can't have a transfer anyway.

How about this ...

With the discount, a MEL-LHR-MEL Y return next May/June is 96,000 points plus $662 QF Fines.

There are sale fares currently available which given you the same for $1627, they earn 24,800 points (if you're WP) and 140 SCs (regardless of status).

"Bank" the 24,800 - or offset their earn against what you currently have in the kitty - and Points+Pay for 120,800 points and $595. Not only is this cheaper than the Classic Award, you get 140 SCs to boot.

Simples!!

Let me tell you my thoughts on this discount ... actually, best not!!

BD

The discount is only available on QF or JQ, not CX out of ADL. So if they want the discount then backtracking has to happen.

I'm glad Qantas stopped giving out status cheaply (cheaper than classic awards).

The issue will be if anyone actually books these and then reports back here.

They'll be accused of "rorting the system", causing locust plagues and generally undermining the $$$billion profit that Qantas has just created ... especially if they have the audacity to use their WP Flounge entitlement ....

Not much good for me being ADL based.
Mind you, no way would I use points for economy rewards.

I'll happily report back to having used nice cheap [-]ASA[/-] P+P awards to get cheap SC and to use the F lounge, and to score a nice upgrade to business into the process. Plus I even rorted it further by not just using a point to point return booking. Imagine how much bigger the record $1 billion profit would've been without my locust plague...

But still who would use their points for economy?

Transfers are still applying the 20% discount if that's what you mean.

It was a reply to the idea of using CX from ADL to get to Europe. There are 2 issues, no discount on CX and no discount if you transfer (<24 hours) at an international gateway. Obviously, the second condition doesn't apply to CX.

BTW domestic transfers are fine. Qantas to Jetstar is not allowed. Transfers to/from qantas or jetstar at an international location are not allowed. I assume that a stopover will get the discount at international.

Pretty stupid considering QF always try to make me fly to Asia by flying QF to SIN then Jetstar anywhere else.

That was the one that really hit me as stupidity. Qantas or Jetstar. Pretty sneaky way to limit liability.
