Thoughts on Qantas 20% off Classic Reward Flights?

With their new financial figures out and a profit posted, Qantas are offering 20% off classic reward flights between I believe september this year and september 2017 while only to August 2017 for JQ flights.

EG. SYD-LHR One way= 60000 points - Now 48000.

Who's thinking about jumping on board before it expires on 27th August. I would love to but sadly don't have enough points to do it for a big int. trip ):

Would you have used your points for an international economy booking?

Yep only Economy as far as I'm aware, yeah I would have but am keen to save up my points as much as possible to use for an upgrade from an economy booking to a business fare (have never flown business or first)

Sometimes it makes sense to book award flights as revenue airfares are expensive. A 20% discount on economy awards can be good value.

I need to come back from Thailand on 04 or 05 October. Revenue airfares are $700-$800. For 35,000 points and ~AUD190 I can do BKK-HKG-BNE or for 22,400 points and ~AUD100 I can do HKG-BNE and ~AUD200 for positioning flight BKK-HKG. Either option gets me more than 1c/point value.

For the return 2 weeks later the cash airfare to KUL is only ~AUD400 but the award is 22,400 points and ~AUD195 so not good value for award.

Can be better value in holiday times that hardly ever go on sale. Eg MEL-BNE return in Y this Christmas is pricing around $488 for many flights but with the points promotion it's 19,200 + $67.72. That's more than 2c/point value... which is not toooo bad.

I actually had a look at redeeming points on SYD-LDH earlier today. The website came back with an error every time. I wonder if it's a coincidence?

It is possible to upgrade (subject to the usual availability issues) from an economy award. But it's also much more expensive. I haven't looked at the specific amounts but I imagine the extra cost would outweigh the 20% saving on the original award ticket.

Well I was the unfortunate soul that booked a return SYD to LHR only yesterday for 120,000 points only to see it on sale today for 96,000 points. My only consolation is that I picked up upper frack window seats on both legs. But timing!!!!! One day!

You could cancel for 5000 points then re-book, although you aren't guaranteed they'll return to available inventory.

You can only upgrade to Premium economy on an economy classic award.

In the maximum distance bracket an upgrade from an award is 90000, from economy it's 60000 points, from flexi economy 24000 points.

If we look at BNE-LAX the cost to upgrade and award is 70000 points versus 45000 points. An award is 45000 points I think, so you'll save 9000 points. So If you get the upgrade then the total cost is 106000 points. A business award is 96000.

I asked about that but it would take 7 days for the refund and the sale would of ended by then. I'm just thrilled I got the upper deck seats 32k and 33a economy a380

How about changing your flights a day either side? It should reprice at the new rate and only charge 3,500 point change fee.

If I'm going to Europe from ADL, still more economical to book a direct OW award on someone like CX, rather than doubling back via SYD/MEL on QF.
