No it’s not easier to comment simply because I’m not the one in that situation.

I am a dog owner and there is absolutely no way I’d ever allow my dog to be placed in an overhead locker and jeopardise their welfare. 100% I would have left the flight and resolved it with the airline in the terminal.

Once you’ve paid many thousands for a Frenchie, the cost of a plane ticket is nominal.

Again, without actually being present it is harsh calling the owner irresponsible.

The buck stops with UA and the Flight attendant. You can say as much as you like being a dog owner (so am I), but until you are present and with the stresses of travel, you don't actually know how you will react.

My 2c worth.

I agree about the stresses of travel and with kids even moreso. For me also that is with the help of a partner, so being on her own with a baby and another kid I would imagine she would have been stressed.

Before Dr Dao, wasn't it UA and musical instruments?

Yes, that rings a bell. And maybe something about baggage handlers throwing bags around (although that's a lot of airlines). Either way, UA has been in the news for all the wrong reasons in the past 12-18 months.

You’re welcome to your 2 cents worth but don’t presume to know my character and how I react/ would react to something like this. Thankfully I’ve got that covered and know how I respond to situations.

I've been facetious about emotional support animals on board but this is ridiculous.

How can a Flight Attendant think this is ok?

Between beating and dragging people off flights and killing dogs can they get worse?

.....just wait.
It can get worse. Words fail me.

From: Republican senator opposed to gun control mocked for animal welfare bill following airline dog death

“I will be filing a bill tomorrow that will prohibit airlines from putting animals in overhead bins,” Mr Kennedy tweeted. “Violators will face significant fines. Pets are family.”

Sad that a beloved pet died, but surely commonsense would prevail and as a passenger transporting an animal ,why would you not check it in as baggage in the hold and retrieve it at your destination!

My guess is cost (carried on-board for free?)

Edit: Unlikely to be accepted as checked baggage. If in the hold, probably need to be transported under additional conditions relating to animals.

On United it's not carried on board for free - there is a charge of USD125.

For such a small dog it makes sense to carry it on board... it is with its owners protected from the outside environment and in theory, less that can go wrong (especially in the US with potential weather delays and/or re-routing).

You and me both. But for this passenger to try to fly with a babe in arms, another child, a dog in a bag, and most likely with carry on bags, it was always going to end in tears.

This whole thing is somewhat curious. I've never heard of anyone putting any animals in the overhead, unless they're trying to smuggle them. What was the dog actually in? The carrier must fit totally under the seat in front. Did it actually do that, or did it stick out?

I think that all animals should actually be in the hold. The US and their support animals has gone way past a joke. With the exception of the very few guide dogs, none of these animals are correctly trained for carriage in the cabin.

Unless it's smuggled on board. Conflicting versions as to who was aware of what and who said what to whom?

In the end, no-one really wins. :(

"When it comes to you, as a customer, vs an airline, you have become patently unallowed to disagree with anyone in an airport or on a plane.

"It has become the one place where the customer is always wrong. If you disagree with anything a gate attendant or ight attendant says, they have all power to have you arrested. Simply taking a photo of the wing or speaking a foreign language can get you in trouble these days.

"Depending on who you argue with at an airport or on a plane, however, you face arrest, having your ticket canceled, or, if you are really unlucky, being added to the “no-y” list".

The dog that died on United is part of a bigger issue – the “security card”

I can't imagine what it would have been like being that dog in the situation. Their last moments feeling as though their owner had put them in that situation. Horrible.
