Think the lounge gave you food poisoning, try the toilet hand dryer!

You can wash your hands 50 times, dry them with sterilised hand towels, then sterilise your hands with a Dettol anti bacterial hand sanitiser, but its all pointless because in Australia some idiot decided that most toilet doors open inwards, requiring you to use your hands again. (Unless you can do what I do which is try to strategically time my exit with someone else's entry/exit and use my feet to hold the door)

Why don't public toilet doors either have an auto open/close or simply open outwards?

That would require too much (un)common sense.

Actually when you think about it, it makes sense to have inward opening doors. If you had outward opening doors then you would be hitting people passing by in the passage. Logical from a practical sense but not from a germ sense.

I am sure an architect could comment but there are rules for which way doors open. Look at your front door, it always opens inwards.

Another reason I prefer having paper towels is because I use them to open the inward opening doors.

A welcome trend is to not have doors at all but zig-zagging walls to prevent line of sight from the outside. Not enough of these yet unfortunately.

Totally agree. These are the best.

washing your hands and drying them with paper towels is more effective then washing your hands combined with hand dryers.

And then you wonder why piggies like me never wash the..... Oups

I just read the original article in full... Anyone else also get the feeling that this is a PR piece placed by some sanitizing gel manufacturer? :D

You know what, I'm going to deliberately use every single thing in this article (or just keep doing what I already do), you know why? Because if I don't my immune system will become so weak that one day someone will sneeze once in the same office as me and it'll kill me because I have no immunity.

We're already seeing the birth of the super-viruses, these are the viruses so strong which there is no known cure, and we can thank having anti-bacterial everything for the super-bugs which will probably wipe us out thanks to no real immunity and anti-bacterial soap killing all the normal bugs.

Have they put the door back on for the mens room in Syd J?

I actually got a call from the lounge manager after I commented on that - like the suggestions here it was about reducing people touching door handles - I got them to put up another "Male" sign as it could be a little risky if approached from another direction you might not see the sign that this was the men's room.

Well done, while one can be fanatical about germs there is also common sense the promotes prevention before cure!

A bit OT but who has a house where the internal door opens outward. Just thought about my house all doors open into the room. I have an idea in the back of my mind that this is related to fire standards but would need to go and do some backup research.

As someone else brought up the topic, can I indulge in some advertising for my new business?:) Mods please delete if this is inappropriate.

Introducing the Orbel a personal hand sanitizing dispenser. Wear it on your belt and it dispenses the gel with a swipe of the hand.

Plus the gel provides ongoing protection for over an hour....don't worry about which way the door opens.....you have protection.

Generally commercial buildings need to have the door opening outwards to allow a lot of people to get to a door at once and still be able to open it by pushing. (Alpine areas excepted).
Residential buildings do not have such a requirement.

I agree but are you talking about exit doors to the outside of a building? If you consider internal doors in a motel (commercial use) they open into the room to offer fire protection rating (that is they act as a capsule to prevent flame egress.) As I said before need to go back and have a look at the standards (however talking about NSW)

Sorry, I was talking about doors to the outside, not internal doors. The BCA (Building Code of Australia) is pretty consistent on that between the states.

A door opening inwards or outwards will not affect the rating of the door. If it is a 'fire door' or 'smoke door' it will have a rating plate/plaque in the door jam near the upper hinge.

Just use the same set up as every commercial kitchen in the world uses, 1 door in, 1 door out. No worries about doors opening into people etc...

So if the air dryers are shooting germs 2 metres around the room, drying your hands on paper towel isn't going to make much difference. In all likelihood, you've gotta walk through the "germ cloud" to exit.

So here I am, the other day, in the men's room at McDonalds. I wash my hands. I look around to find only a hand dryer, no towels.

The first thing that comes to mind as I hit the button is the "germ cloud". I'll probably be affected for life you know...

Well to all the PPs out there(Paranoid people) channel10 today had a good one on the"doctor's Show".Kitchen knife blocks grew more bacteria than the surrounds of a toilet.
