Not much at all; a bit disappointing really. Its not distilled from sassafras but rather the leaves are sort of steamed and the essence added to spirit produced from sugar (IIRC). There is a distinct taste, but I wouldn't readily identify it as sassafras if it was a blind taste test.

The story: Bakehouse Distillery

Over 60 years ago a number of experiments were conducted to establish the toxicity of a compound known as Safrole, thought to exist in all Sassafras species. The results from these experiments became instrumental in validating an almost total global ban on the use of Sassafras in all victuals.

Given the evocative flavoured scent of the tree, Martin set out to see if he could extract the oils from the leaves. This endeavour produced positive results with no traces of Safrole present.

Don't know where to put a lot of these, maybe in a random photo thread. Anyway we went for a drive beyond N. K. and offered a lift to these two ladies as they were walking up a steep hill. They both had 'pangas' with them and were off into the bush to cut something. At first the older lady seemed very nervous, then they both started talking and giggling. They didn't know how to open the car door, I'm guessing they always travel in the back of a ute/truck and not inside. We stopped where they asked, which to us didn't have anything of interest, went we drove back the other way way we could see a couple of tracks disappearing up into the bush.

Notice the young girl in the boat seems to be totally engrossed with her phone. Nearly everyone here has a 'handy'.
