The Velocity Status Run Master thread

So I'm reading the T&CS as this is just for flights with SCs for $ spent and not the VA holidays based on miles flown?
Yes, as it has been since it switched to SC per $; the VA Holidays is a different promo that finished in March

Just had my review, downgraded to Gold because I didn't receive all my missing SCs yet due to rerouted Qatar flight... very annoying. I will try to contact them for the 3rd time about this, but unless they re-instate my plat as it should be, I'm definitely not going for it again.

Is there collective thinking on the best status runs available to go from:

Red -> Plat
Silver -> Plat
Gold -> Plat

(I'm not really thinking about all the other combinations).

I haven't been WP in a while as I've done zero flying during and post pandemic, sadly.. but I was curious what the options were nowadays as many of the routes that worked don't seem to be around any more.

e.g a favourite used to be booking SYD/BNE -> AKL -> RAR (return) in business. VA doesn't fly to RAR anymore, sadly.

Look at VA holidays packages and flying on partner airlines.

VA status runs don't really exist anymore since the switch to revenue based SC earn.
Yeah, that's what I thought. Sad days and slightly counter intuitive because once it becomes a pure revenue calculation that works both ways - a bunch of folk (like myself) aren't likely to bother chasing status when it's no fun because there's no way to game it.. (since even booking "cheap" fares on partner airlines presumably doesn't do anything for higher SC earn?)

Could try and see what price results from SYD-PER one way then PER-SIN-HKG-SIN-SYD on SQ. Or utilise VA code share points better ..SYD-PER return and separate booking PER-AKL-PER... on ANZ but booked through VA as VA flight number.....🤔🫣. Exciting wee trips....☺️😜

Or just jump on one of many DSC offers VA drop now, 3 in 1st 6 months of 2026.

Clear sign they want status holders to spend $$$ but want less crowded lounges. Yep work that one out!

Very short timeframe for the current one though - spend before 30/6 and fly before 12/7. Smells of needing to get more $$ in the door prior to EOFY and reporting deadlines.

If I had to spend any more than $300 on a status run to get to Gold or $700 to get to Plat I wouldn’t be bothering. These are my valuations of the value I get for the status. It would be cheaper to just get the Amex card and pay as you go for EconX, Wifi and any extra bags.

I could reasonably go for Plat+ with the current DSC promo but am not bothering because it seems to add nothing.

“VFF - going for mediocre”

The only "hack" now, as some others have suggested, is booking Virgin Australia Holidays (flight + hotel), status earn based on old rates, plus when they have double status you are effectively looking at triple to quadruple status, compared with current dollar earn rates. That and international on Virgin Australia marketed partner routes. Air NZ can be a good one, booked via VA, like business to Auckland, advanced booking can work out very well.

I have no intention of spending a cent more with VA than I have to.

As a UA MP Plat for life, I have access to the lounges and priority boarding, and if I want a special seat I'll pay for it.

Under the old rules, I would have probably paid my way to VA Platinum, as I have in the past, but not now.
