No compulsory voting over here....
Well, is anyone over there worth voting for? 20% turnout is good for you in some elections I read.

And FPTP not preferential.

Vai Screaming Lord Sutch or The Raving Looney Party

Ah sorry! It was The Official Monster Raving Looney Party. My bad.

i would have voted for him!

Voting is not compulsory in Australia, turning up to have your name marked off is compulsory, however.
I believe from the Albert Langer case in MEL some years ago that you actually have to make a mark, not necessarily valid, on the ballot paper.

But how would they know whether you do or not unless you tell someone since it's supposedly anonymous?

Having been a scrutineer a few times there are definitely blank papers in the ballot boxes.
Sometimes a little message indicating the reason why it is an informal vote and often a write in such as Mickey Mouse gets the number 1.

And some artistic renditions of the good old D&Bs, from memory.

If you want some unpaid fun try being an election scrutineer to see how the votes are tallied and to read voters comments and pictures on voting slips.

It's hilarious, the halfwits who do that seem to think that they are somehow sending a message to their despised politicians. (the artists I mean, not the scrutineers)

I know it seems pointless to do that but in SA our electoral boundaries are such that the party that receives overall 50% of the vote isn't elected either. Voting properly seems pointless.

Yes, train travel is different!

On my return TGV Paris to Lyon tickets and confirmation it states:

Please arrive at the indicated departure platform at least 2 minutes prior to departure.

and

To ensure TGV services leave on time, travellers must board the train at least 2 minutes before the time of departure. We cannot guarantee you will be allowed to board the train after this time.

Is 1 minute 55 seconds pushing it? :)

Surfing through the ABC, 7 and 9 election coverages, going to be a boring night with an easy Lib/Nat win, but I love Anthony Green - it's a joy to watch a guy who loves his work so much get into full swing :)

Probably. If the doors are locked then that's it.

Indeed. Sometimes if you are trying to wait for someone to rush for the train, you can stand in the doorway and keep the door from closing whilst they bolt for it.

Otherwise, no apologies made - doors closed is doors closed. You can behave like a whining maniac outside whilst the train begins to pull away and usually not much will come from it, except someone may put you on Youtube (without repercussion) and you may get told by the officials to move on (and buy a new ticket).

Thanks! I'll be super, extra careful and allow an extra minute then. Just to be on the safe side! That's 50% more time than I need! :)

(it's funny, the 2 minutes thing, compared with airline travel ... train travel does have some advantages :) )
