The totally off-topic thread

Totally agree, nothing like showing a little courtesy regardless of how often you fly.

In a "win for the FAs" moment I was on the VA first departing morning flight SYD-MEL along with mostly other people heading down for business meetings. As usual 90%+ were doing their "I'm the centre of the Universe" routine and ignoring the FAs as they rushed around to get the departure off early (VA was good at that many years ago).
<snip>
Then he got to the "Once you're in the water and you want to attract attention then just do this...."

He took one extremely deep breath and blew the whistle for 10 or more seconds. Saying blew is a bit of a dis-service for his efforts - the noise was both incredibly loud and shrill.

I suspect that chiropractors in both Sydney and Melbourne experienced an increase in business after that.

<snip>.

That post made my day. Totally agree with the first line and I would have applauded the FA who 'blew the whistle'.

And the maths question also pleased me - that my wine addled old brain can still do more than just remember 15 different flipping passwords  (or at least the minor 'algorithm' I use to construct each )

Ahh yes, I yearn for the era when Casinos would just give money away...oh wait.
As it turns out I now have $150 casino dollars to replace the $150 slots dollars. Much better as I can now use for food, accommodation etc and do not have to play on pokie machine.

Moral of the story is complain if you feel you are wronged.

Sorry John K, but the house always wins.
You are right but that does not mean that everybody loses.

New experience for my folks: they are travelling MNL-KUL-BNE on MH.

Normally before, this would require catching the evening flight MNL-KUL, overnighting at a hotel (usually provided by MH), then catching the single-daily KUL-BNE flight the next morning.

The schedules of MNL/KUL were slightly changed and the flight which they are catching is a red eye leaving MNL in the wee hours of the morning, arriving in KUL with a 3-4 hour transit before the KUL-BNE flight.

If I recall correctly, MNL/KUL takes about 3 hours and is operated with a 737-800. I'm guessing they're both going to be pretty tired by the time they get on the KUL-BNE flight, let alone when they get home.

No idea. Probability is not relevant when you know what is going to happen.

Pot of soup. Let's say 6 portions and 2 chillis. I have 1-2 portions and I get the 1 or 2 chillis every time. No fail. Mum is shocked. She has no idea how it happens as she wants the chillis.

One flight delayed between 3:00pm and 6:00pm. Guess who is on it?

And the best one is when the train, the bus and the airplane are delayed on the same day!

I feel special....

My wife always has that kind of "luck" whenever we have a pack of Revels. Always ends up picking out the coffee flavoured ones!

On the subject of maths, I remember what my late mum used to recall when she was at school, and struggling with maths.

"When the teacher used to say something like "Let X equal 5", I used to say, "But what if it isn't? or ... "Why X and not Z?" " :)

But if you keep playing eventually the house wins, unless you learn to count cards.
Not necessarily. The trick is to know when to stop. Even if only after 30 minutes. Don't play catch up. You will always lose.

Currently stuck on busy Greenhill Road waiting for a tow truck. Blew a radiator hose on the road - poof - steam everywhere. Son can replace the hose for $20. Such a cheap thing to strand someone.

I was going to post "someone buzz me when this thread is back in English" seems I am not the only one "lost in translation" LOL

There's a Russian joke that goes something like this, "A Russian general is discussing with his troops, 'OK, suppose we have a unit with M tanks... Nyet! Not enough - suppose we have a unit with N tanks...'"

Whilst the discussion is perfectly understandable to me, it is starting to get somewhat pure.

Some parts of mathematics relies on axioms, i.e. things which have no proof but are accepted as true. Some others are definitions, which are much the same - they are accepted as true with no proof. Division by zero can be argued as undefined using many approaches, and not too many meritable ones to argue its possibility, but it is mostly accepted as a definition, unlike something else like multiplying any number by zero, which is easily proven.

Parts of pure maths are involved in proving some rather fundamental things which most of us - whether we use maths heavily or not - don't have time to be bothered with, not to mention the rationales and reasoning behind some of these proofs can be quite confusing (you were better off accepting that it was just true in the first place).

As for the capacitor thing, surely the answer is based on the chemical (etc.) properties of the capacitor and rule of thumb knowledge of the effectiveness of capacitors at a given time. Whilst the retort, "Just accept it is thus," is rather brusque, surely a curt reason could have been offered instead.

Cranes as far as the eye can see and no end in sight!

Eeek, not the place or way you want to break down. Hope the RAA were there swiftly.
