I flew SYD BNE on QF552 the other night. When the drinks trolley arrived I asked for a coffee as I still had a long drive ahead.
When the coffee arrived I was surprised tofind that the flavour had improved over the normal black swill that is served.
I took off down to the galley to find out what they had done and discovered that they don't use their normal brewed coffee on this flight due to low demand. Instead they had served me an instant coffee made with less than boiling water and whipped by spoonin FA hand.
The combination of fresh water (not contaminated through the brewer) being below boiling temerature and the swill not stewing in the pot waiting to be served made for an enjoyable night.
Not saying I prefer instant but int his case I think they would be better sticking to instant over the low cost brewing method.
I wonder if they'll ever get coffee right in flight.
