Looks similar to Ben Kozel’s tales of adventure in far off places. He wrote about sailing down the Amazon with a certain naivety: Three Men In a Raft. And trekking through Russia to sail a small boat to its Arctic shore: Five months in a Leaky Boat.

Both crakin’ good reads.

Will have to give this one a look too.

Yes he has been at the Salamanca markets for a while.I thought he was not my sort of traveller and rather looked down on anyone who didn't do as he did.

My wife bought me a copy - I do enjoy these travel stories. Quite an enjoyable read. As often seems the case, lots of details at the start, gradually becoming less as the trip progresses. I do admire the courage of people prepared to have a go at travel like this - not for me these days, but happy to go along for the ride.

One of the many travel books I have, I bought my copy in Canberra, then later saw him at the markets in Tasmania, tried to talk to him and tell him about my own overland trip from Singapore to London, but he wasn't interested!

Maybe a good thread would be "travel books that you have read"

Another thing on my "to do" list is organise all my books, my cds, dvds, records, my photos and my wine collection and so on

Interesting on the comments of angst from the author, doesn't sound like someone you'd want to travel with!

Sometimes it's best to leave "celebs" at arms length and just enjoy their offerings (writing, music, movies etc). I have met a few people who I thought I admired ... right up until they spoke. After that, my enjoyment of their works was lost.

I now prefer not to meet people I admire.

I'm sceptical of authors who appear to contrive whacky adventures in order to write about it.
