The joy of alcohol on planes

Did the two SQ suites flights to LAX from SIN and it was Krug, Dom,RWT Penfolds, a fine French red and of course an icy Vodka with the caviar. Switched to water after a long sleep and caught a taxi to get to home.

No bottles Plant as I don't want to be swept out of my cabin by the cleaners. Having food and water is necessary to avoid dehydration on those long hauls.

I have often wondered if my sleep on planes would be better with out the alcohol.

I managed 3 bottles of dom on a 6 hour flight and i was not in the best shape on landing. I could not fathom 8 bottles of champagne.

Seems most of my long hauls are constantly in the middle of the night (& not conducive to drinking).

Likewise, though let's just say I was not totally disappointed to get hit with a 13 hour delay out of LAX on VA to BNE, flight during the day the entire way was quite a bit more enjoyable and with just a few more glasses of champagne. I wish there were more (read: any) all day flights ex-USA to Australia!

Interesting. That should have been a full flat bed? Just out of interest - were there any particular issues with the seat itself?

No particular issues. It was my first time in one and it was just a little harder and narrower than I'd expected. No big deal.

... If one has a built up substantial tolerance for alcohol - such drinking is indeed possible, even while maintaining a reasonable level of coherence.
Definitely not one of my proudest achievements.

Some painful memories here.... But I seem enjoy a few Red's or a Hop or three when I'm working away on the long hauls with no sleep; like two weeks ago and polished all the "London Pride" from LHR to HKG by BA. I think the best was the Chateau Lynch Bages 1986 years ago on CX F. A mate and I sat al night with the staff enjoying a little tipple. We didn't drink the stock because they gave us a bottle each as we got off......

And for the bubbles, not sure if the OJ makes it taste better (blasphemy for some, stirring of course)

I enjoy a few drinks in the lounge pre boarding and when on an international J flight with a bit of a play with bubbles and white wine with a couple of Baileys before bed gets me off to sleep.
Will not go through immigration even slightly pi$$ed.

Pity that QF takes 40 mins to serve a drink on international flights.

I usually have a few in the lounge before the flight, although my quality requirements can be very simple. Quite often, the local-brand beer would do me just fine. Although last weekend, on SQ J, they were rather keen on feeding me Taittinger. I finally refused the 3rd refill offer. It's definitely a lot to fit in for a 3.5 hour flight.

Well, I can tell you now with my new international experience in J (SYD-LAX and the reverse) that a 'four or so boozes rule' holds me in good stead. One in the lounge with a snack, one (maybe two) bubbles on boarding, one with a meal on the plane, plus a nightcap and a mild sleeping aid and I am good to go. (Well, actually not go I suppose). Excellent sleep on board with that and no jet lag or hangover.

With the extra flying time to Europe I could successfully turn that into a 'five or so boozes rule'.

I don't drink alcohol. I find it incredibly annoying that one of the first things the crew does is repeatedly try to give me some. Even after I ask for something else and always refuse the liquor.

Really? Although alcohol is among the offerings, I never felt it was being foisted on me. My partner only drinks alcohol at specific times of the day and he's never felt pressured to drink, nor had any attitude or problems with getting a non alcoholic beverage.

Do you explicitly tell the crew you don't drink alcohol?
