The great hand luggage only challenge!!!

Thanks serfty.

I actually made a mistake in my last post, the garment bag is bi-fold (not tri-fold). So, it's even less likely to be considered a personal item.

I am just looking at the tumi web site and some of the tri-fold bags look very much to be the size of laptop bags, so we're getting back into the area of "personal item" again.

I actually have that trifold bag and absolutely love it! The side pocket is perfect for a pair of shoes (themselves stuffed with socks etc)

Google maps seems to indicate there's a Tumi store in Melbourne (or a reseller at least).

I called to price a tri-fold.

The response I got was:

"Oh, I'd have to look that one up, sorry".

And then just silence.

WTF?

This is why I buy all my cough online.

It is actually pretty hard to buy Tumi on line :( Obviously if you ever have a trip to the US that is the place to buy it. I bought a new Tumi laptop bag at HKG airport and saved about 30% off the price in Oz...

If you still need a price for the Tumi trifold let me know - I often walk past the new Tumi store in SYD so can pop in if you want.

Oh, thanks for the kind offer.

I actually rang pretty much all the tumi stores I could find in MEL & SYD this morning. Nothing in Melbourne, and only 1 store in Sydney had a tri-fold and it was the leather one. They said it was around $1k. I briefly considered asking them to send it down but I'd really never pay this much for a bag unless I had a chance to see it with my own eyes first.

I'm leaving for NRT in 2 days so I'm just going to re-think my packing strategy a little for this trip. I have quite a few international flights coming up so I'll keep my eyes peeled. Thanks again. :)

Darn - there goes my excuse to pop in and see what is new... I bought my trifold (not leather) in NYC and it was A LOT less than $1K. Maybe around US$250 (when it was 0.7)... I did actually buy the leather one in London to replace a bag that never arrived - sadly the bag did arrive just before I left London so had to return it...

Yep, unfortunately I'll need at least two. The business attire situation works a little different for ladies.

Here's what I do.

PACK:
. One good quality BLACK slacks or skirt (your preference - for me, it's slacks)
. 2 blouses that can double as light jackets - overblouses particularly good, especially if silk
. 2 camis that will work with the blouse/jackets
. Black stockings
. Black court shoes
. 2 sets of undies (wash as you go)
. 1 casual top
. Night attire that can double as cover up for pool etc. Having been caught once very badly when I had to leave the room in a nightie, I now wear only "resort PJ's" at night.

WEAR:
. Black overcoat + cardigan +++
. Black slacks + casual top
. Black casual shoes + socks
. Carry and change into ballet slippers. The slippers give some protection against what might be on the toilet floor. Also good for hotel rooms etc.

Be prepared to wash undies.

Learnt this many years ago when I used to work with fashion designers who regularly flew ATW. One lady would do 2-3 weeks with carry on only. Her philosophy was: One on, one in the wash and one clean. Had to go suppliers, then onto the opera at night so a number of looks - but always based on black.

Good luck

Maybe a bit late. But when I was in Tokyo May 2010, the hotel (business hotel) had a trouser press thing on each floor. It was pretty good, used it most nights. I've not seen similar in other countries.

The trifold is great for shorter trips. On long haul I can get the trifold on top of the rollaboard if the overhead bins are full. The side pocket on the trifold is great for shoes - with it on top of the rollaboard when walking it makes for a heavy package though.

In somewhat sad news the rollaboard yesterday had its frequent flyer tags removed. Over the past year the frequency of domestic trips (logged 91 sectors last year - only about 20 of those were int'l) has actually led to some pain in my elbow due to the weight of the rollaboard. I got around to weighing the Tumi a little while ago and found it was 5.5kg - EMPTY! So with some regret I ordered a Red Oxx Air Boss which arrived today. Sadly that means that the Tumi has retired to the wardrobe for the foreseeable future. It might be rolled out for int'l trips but for the domestic hops I will be giving the Air Boss a go!

Farewell old friend - after around 300 flights you have served me well!

Thread reopened at my request - always nice to indulge people sometimes ;)

Also, some times it is more cost effective to purchase new 'smalls' than have the hotel laundry see to those of yours in need of a wash. ;)
All of my undies were purchased overseas. Laundry runs are often expensive or difficult or just too long in a short day, but there's always some little shop around that will sell you a threepack of jocks.

Has anyone tried the Eagle Creek Pack-it garment sleeve for packing a suit into their hand luggage?

I'm looking at trying it for a trip I've got coming up where the first time (for a very long time) I need to wear a suit.

It weighs 0.5kgs and the folded size is 53 x 33 x 5cm, so it fits into a carry on bag.

So yours has changed @serfty since before?

Not really - around the turn of the century, I wore a suit to Singapore.

I have been a member of the "Church of Minimal Luggage" since.

Circa 2010 I needed a Jacket to dine at a particular Restaurant in Rome. I hit a charity store for something inexpensively appropriate, took it with me, wore it to the restaurant and left it. As far as I know it is still sitting in the Hotel's wardrobe ... :)

Impossible for some. I subscribe to the AYLA principle. I'm about to head off to SYD T3 to weigh 3 bags and try stay under 38kgs for SQ flight tomorrow.

I wonder how much travelling light has changed in 5 plus years

I can't recall when the HL max weights dropped to 7kg, but I'd be thinking that if they do now regularly weigh hand luggage as reported, we'll see many people no longer able to do HLO.
