When I started this thread, ~700 had died from this current outbreak. The total now stands at ~1100. Roughly 1800 have died in total from Ebola since the first death in the mid 70's. So about 61% of all Ebola deaths have occurred in this current outbreak.

According to the Doctors on the ground, the virus is moving too fast to contain.

The Ebola crisis in west Africa is outstripping the ability of aid organisations to stem the epidemic, the head of international medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said Friday, likening it to a war. "It is deteriorating faster, and moving faster, than we can respond to," Joanne Liu told reporters a day after returning from a 10-day mission to the hard-hit region.
"It is like war time. There is fear," she said.

The way I read it is the wider global community doesn't care because it is an African problem and because their might be a vaccine next year...

It's not so much an African problem as it is a problem of African tribes mistrust in western medicine. If a person is infected they are more likely going to seek out family members and / or witch doctors first than attempting to contact western medical help.

You are right, there are probably a high number of unreported cases, simply because there is mistrust of western medicine.
