The Ebola Virus

I don't believe in politics or sugar coating issues.

Time to start worrying. Ebola cases have now been confirmed in all continents? Not good. Doesn't take much for a virus to mutate.

I just find it difficult when USA survivors who receive the best medical care in the USA say they placed their faith in God for their recovery.

I guess God only looks after the advantaged in this world.
Faith is a powerful healer.

I can give you plenty of examples but sceptics simply write it off as a coincidence. I don't believe in coincidence.

Faith makes you a stronger person.

Why start worrying? What good will that do?

Unless you plan to get cozy with a person with ACTIVE symptoms you won't catch it just even by being near them (thus the reason "Clipboard guy" was in no danger). The people whom are at risk of actually catching it are people who will get in close contact with a person who has the virus, aka Doctors / Nurses / Undertakers, and if you happen to live in a tribal area in Africa which does not trust / have access to western medicine, any friend / family member whom is looking after an infected person themselves without knowing the danger.

Not according to the Dr's I've heard from, however according to someone who is in the know, it can't easily happen, and his comment on the "advice" as given by some of the other Dr's out there was pretty direct

OK, an interesting key point from Dr Grant Hill Cawthorne,
<snip>
An interesting comment made, most comments from Dr's which have been published have been from Dr's who are not specialists in Infectious diseases. He didn't exactly have any kind words for them (pretty much compared it to getting medical advice from gardeners).

It seems the the virus itself doesn't kill people, it's the symptoms of the virus that is killing people before their immune system is able to fight off the virus. The survivors are those people able to get the care to treat and manage the symptoms.
Thus, survivors should have ebola antibodies in their blood.

Why aren't we seeing more use of those antibodies?

I understand the virus has already mutated as its incubation period has changed.

As far as "catching it" if a person with Ebola sneezed the particles become airborne.

If there's one thing I have learned in life is to expect the unexpected.

Doctors are not always in control. And there isn't a cure for everything.

And for the vast majority it is a matter of trying the highest probability solution first and if that doesn't work then the next and so on. Not often absolute knowledge of the problem. One reason PBS is soo expensive (donations and lobbyists also have a part to play).

They already have given the blood of survivors to those recently infected.

I believe it was successful. Don't know what the limiting factor(s) is stopping them using the antibodies of survivors. Although I would guess they would want clinical trials, plus the cost factor of taking the antibodies out the blood.

But why worry about something you can't control? Don't do stupid things obviously, but at the same time, unless you are in a direct position to control the outcome worry does nothing.

Also yes Dr can get it wrong, however if you listen to the actual experts rather than ppl looking for their 15 minutes (so Dr's of unrelated fields, pollies, joe average on the street giving their opinion) the outlook is far more positive. To put this back to an airline example, after a crash a thousand "experts" all give media interviews without any real knowledge, this is no different

There are lots of potential things to worry about in the world.

IMO if Ebola is near the top of your list, then you must live a fearful life.

Scientists in Paris have been reporting Ebola has mutated and is now is killing less people.

Well certainly the media think that... Has been very quiet, but the lack of 'western' victims is probably more the reason.

No there has been a significant drop in new cases in the 3 countries affected-
Ebola

Note the graphs about a third the way down the page.

I have a brother in West Africa on mission for the WFP now.
Problem still very real.
New infections have stabilised in some places and dropped in others which is encouraging but complacency could easily see the virus take off again.
My brother is due to have one weeks R&R and finding countries that will happily let a person arriving from an Ebola ravaged area just mix with their citizens is not so easy.
I think it is either Rome or Casablanca where he is headed.
