The demise of first class

We've clawed our way from the back of Y to J and Im happy. I tell myself Im happy, we're happy. We perfectly happy in J, its good in J, we're good in J.

But lately.... Ive been thinking, my eye has been wandering. Can we try F just once? Can we actually get The Residence or The Apartments or the Suites, just for a flight, to see what its like, using points of course because financially its out of reach.

Then we will go back to J... but I said the same about PE, I was happy there too... once.

*sigh*

Since my travel is self funded, any premium cabin travel is going to rely on op-ups, award flights or finding a miraculously low fare. I have traveled J a few times thanks mainly to awards and it was pretty good. That said, I think I've accepted my return to Y with good grace and humour (flying Y in SQ and TK helps ;)). I'm sure F is a little nicer in various areas (although I wouldn't like over fawning service much) but in terms of the most realistic way of accessing it, i.e. awards, I could have 3 J awards for the price of 2 F awards (the F awards would obviously also have limited itinerary options). So I'm of the mind that 3 high quality J awards is better value for points than the 50% premium for F.

You should definitely try F. I think it is big upgrade from J. Flying F is an extravagant experience from the moment you enter the airport with dedicated lounges, personalised service, 5 course meals, private suites etc. it's fun and existing way to fly.

I see that you're member since 2012. Back then things were different... our dollar was high and airlines offered some amazing opportunities to book F using miles. It was cheap, sometimes similar price to buying Y or PE ticket. Those days are gone... our dollar depreciated by 30% and many airlines adjusted their redemption tables and closed loopholes.

It's not game over yet, there are still some gems around like TG F 40K UA and generous offers such as buying LM at 145% bonus. Also, applying for 5-7 CCs per year will ensure keeping decent stock of QF/VA(KF)/MR points that can be used for F travel.

Good luck!
