Hi all,

I'm a long-time lurker (and learner) and today a first-time poster.

As the title suggests, I finally had the opportunity today to book mrs oz_matt and myself into SQ J flying from FRA to ADL next August. I've been earning miles for years with a Westpac Krisflyer Gold credit card and occasional flights to/from Europe or Japan on holidays. I normally redeem the miles to book mrs oz_matt in Y alongside my purchased Y ticket. Saving us about $800 or so on a return flight to Europe, for example.

But this time, due to a bit longer between trips to earn miles on the CC and taking up the 100,000 velocity bonus points on the AMEX platnium CC and converting the points to KF miles, I've got enough to treat us both in J!

Unfortunately the miles and $$ won't stretch to enjoying the outbound flights in J, but we're really excited to be coming home from our next Europe trip in style!

I'm so thankful that AFF is a forum available with tips and tricks to those of us interested in learning about achieving the most from our resources and travel opportunities. Thanks everyone!

Firstly welcome to AFF oz_matt - you have a great experience ahead of you - you will just love the J product ex FRA - SIN-ADL leg is o/n flt? 330 has regional J product does it not? Not totally horizontal for sleeping but a big step up from Y - enjoy your flts and do report back pls.

We're taking SQ325 FRA-SIN B777-300ER overnight flight. Then 7 hrs in Singapore. Then SQ279 SIN-ADL A330-300 (yes, regional J product)

We loved our recent SQJ flight from Sin to Adelaide. Courtesy of Westpac. Our J flight Rome - Sin was pretty disappointing however. But I've heard that this particular sector is one of SQ's let downs. Hope your sector is better.

We had 18 hours in Sin. (Arrived at 5.30 am and dep at 2300). Not the best as it means 2 overnight flights in a row and no sleep in between.

Booking to/from AMS rather than FRA will save you 15k miles each. Might be worth considering.

Welcome aboard oz_matt - sounds like a real treat.

And also save some taxes. The advantage though of FRA (and LHR) for ADL based travellers is that you can take the evening departures, arriving SIN late afternoon and you don't have the 18 hr layover in SIN that Pushka had. Instead down to around 7 hours.

However if starting in AMS, I'd go all the way through to MEL and book a separate ticket to ADL on VA or QF. Arrives in MEL around 5 or 6pm. So would be home that night, but flipside is leaving Europe at midday instead of late evening departure from FRA.

Hi all,

Welcome Oz_Matt to the SIA thread. I wonder if it is too late to consider another option.

Have you looked at the total cost ot the trip given that you have to buy one way outbound tix? Generally one way tix might not be as well priced as return tix. Maybe buy the right SQ Y tix return and upgrade the sectors you want. At the way SQ taxes are going this might be cheaper and you will then earn miles on those upgraded sectors.

Have fun mate! I too am about to take my first reward flights on SQ in two weeks! Trip report to follow!!! :D

Enjoy your trip.

No time for sleep? I recently took a red eye BKK-HKG-TPE and arrived at hotel around 11:00am. Managed to get into room early and had a nap until ~4:00pm. Got ready and headed back out to airport before 6:00pm for some dinner and the flights back.

Did the same thing with dad back in 2009 when we did LHR-HKG arriving in morning and then travelling HKG-PER-SYD on a red-eye.

I guess it helps if you can sleep at will.

Helps more if Singers isn't fuming...?

Sideways, I HAD WONDERFUL attentive service today from the SQ Call centre (Diana) to sort out a wait-list J award that came through (to SYD) for tomorrow. Then I had to apologetically call back and move it, due to some Australian rescheduling occurring this morning. So, the pleasant, professional and understanding SQ team impresses. Senior AFFs and SQ travelers - like CE- have helped me enormously with SQ back-grounding and head-ups. I'm seriously impressed with the Raffles bar - and generally with Changi airport.

Enjoy your trip.

We napped. But trying to get back to AU time for work in 2 days time so a long sleep in the middle of the day wasn't on. Cant wait until we dont have to worry about 'work' time. Just remembered - my mothers sister died that morning and we had to deal with my mum at a distance so with coming home after a great holiday, going back to work then dealing with family issues didnt equal a restful time so much.

I did sleep on the SQ Sin-Adl though.

It is too late this time. But I'll keep in mind for next time.

I didn't consider upgrades as I thought I read here that they weren't a good use of points, and outright is better. I've just searched for Y Flexi fares on the dates we want, and they total $5248, versus $2268 (Y Flexi saver) or $3178 (Y Flexi) for one way outbound, and $1079 fees and taxes for J redemption inbound (~$3347, Y outbound and J inbound). So we'll go with that this time.

Thanks for the pointers.
