Set to be announced in the upcoming Queensland Government budget and will be replacing the AAIF from 2026 onwards (assuming its for 4 years as per the current 2022-2025 AAIF).

Subsidies should never be paid to international airlines.

Claims of (say) '$54 million' in gains for a state economy are spurious.

There may well be more Australian-based students returning to India for family visits, and Australian tourists going to India or elsewhere, than there are foreigners arriving in Oz as leisure or business travellers.

Many passengers would be travelling anyway, via another airline or on other Malaysia Airlines flights if the 'extra' flights did not occur.

There is a general lack of transparency with state government subsidies like this. It's rare for electors/taxpayers to be told how much moolah has been given, and what happens when the subsidy ends (and when does it?)

In Victoria a subsidy was even given to Asiana Airlines for a seasonal Seoul-Melbourne service. Qantas at various times has also had its hand out if my memory is correct, with a different example being how unlike some competitors such as Qatar, Qantas only agreed to offer Covid-19 repatriation flights if the Federal government subsidised each flight.

International airlines ought stand on their own two feet.

I had assumed that it related to competition to the region (and beyond). BNE-SiN has 5-6 daily services between SQ (4) and QF(1-2) whereas ADL just had 1-2 daily services to SIN on SQ.
