The camaraderie of economy? How I stopped worrying and learned to love the Y

I have to agree. It's easy to love J, (actually it's far too easy) but the reality of the cost, when you are using your own $$ makes it hard. A recent trip to coughet for two of us cost $2200 in total in discount economy. Business was an eye watering $10,000 for the two of us. Thanks, but I'd rather have a great hotel (and multiple nights of the hotel), memorable experiences and a coughtail or two at my destination than spend that much on a xx hour flight.

This is where points come in. Lifemiles would do you the same itinerary for ~$1600 per person in business class. $250 each way for a flat bed and 7 hours sleep is not a bad deal. But it still adds $1000 to the itinerary.

Queue anyone over the age of 60 on a mobile in public

I cannot let that through to the keeper. The people who talk loudly in phones in my experience are aged 30-45 and who don’t care about those around them or who think their business is more important than anything else. Male and female. People aged in their sixties did not grow up with a mobile and they know how to live without one.

That's still quite some difference. From memory not that long ago and it was just more than half that amount. That's what happens to cheap points redemptions when you "Ozbargain" them or similar.

The $1600 is return. Been the same price for quite a while (ever since they added 10K for redemptions ex AU). Bit more expensive these days with the falling aussie dollar.

I know BMI was only $900-$1100 return in business with points + pay. US airways was also quite good and Avianca was ok 6-7 years ago.
