I've usually given my points to family members to fly around the country but now for the first time I've flown on my own points to Canada - used QFF to LAX then UA points from there.

Was wondering what is the best use someone has got out of their points. I feel good about giving needy rels flights but who has done a really good trip on points?

The best use of my points was when O took 3 months long service leave and cashed in 910K QF FF points for 7 RTW tickets and took the family (plus Mrs NM's parents as our travelling baby-sitters) on a little sightseeing tour.

We spent 3 weeks driving around the USA west coast through theme parks and national parks. The 3 weeks on the USA East coast driving from Florida to DC, then train to NY, Niagara and finally to Toronto.

Then a weekend in Kiev followed by 3 weeks driving around the UK. Then 3 weeks training around Europe.

Now saving for the next 3 month RTW holiday.

NM, I am thinking of doing something similar in terms of numbers of people but not quite as far - did you have any trouble getting 7 seats redeemed on points on each sector on the one flight?

No problems on most sectors. As a Platinum FF member there was plenty of availability as it was all in economy. The only difficulties were:
  • Could not get direct flight LAS-DFW and so had to go LAS-LAX-DFW
  • Originally had to book two different flights with BA from YYZ to LHR (5 NM's on one flight and 2 inlaws in the other). Later two more seats were available on the original flight so we all travelled together. Back then when a Platinum member booked an economy award on BA they were put into WT+ pending availability, which is not the case anymore.
This was all booked about 6-7 months before travel commenced.

My best use of points was a J RTWabout 4 years ago - 330,000 points (had to cough up the extra 30K because I went over on mileage).

Subsequently, I don't use for award flights any more - better value in getting any long-haul upgrade to J (like upcoming BNE/LAX/BNE x 2 or BNE/PER 3 days after our return from USA, which I wasn't looking forward to do in Y).

Mrs LW's best use of QF points was to transfer the maximum (100K) to me for our use on our upcoming trip. Her best use of AA FF points was to get us upgraded to First on AA LAX/DFW/MIA and the best use of my parents AA FF points (15K each) was a Christmas present of upgrade to First on AA MIA/SFO (a 6hr flight, so greatfully received).

My best use was actually using them. THe number of people that save them up for years then can't get what they want.... big waste!

Points dont accumulate interest...so burn those suckers when you can!

Award flight SYD-BNE-SIN-BNE-SYD last June and got in before May25 changes and only cost 50,000 points. :) Only transit in BNE.

I have enough for another award trip, now 60,000 points, and have my eyes on route SYD-DRW-SIN-BNE-SYD in April. Only transit in DRW and BNE but 2 hours in DRW would be nice.

I would love to get direct flight to BKK but it is one of the hardest awards flights to get a return flight within a couple of weeks unless you book 365 in advance. :(

Half a dozen of the old 37,500 point 11,000km round Australia Business class trips. 3 for me, 1 with Wife and 5yo mini serfty (paid for her) & 2 for honeymoon of 26YO (not so) mini serfty and new hubby.

60,000 points for one way 1st Class trip MEL-xSYD-SIN and 40,000 back to MEL in Oct 2001 before I lost emerald/OG. All were booked prior to first major changes in September 2001. (e.g. QF killed one way award trips)

I don't have many points but certainly the best use of my points so far was a SYD-LAX upgrade to Business with Skybed, followed a close second by a trans tasman upgrade that saw me in 747 first due to 3 class sold as 2.

The points give me an experience that I would probably otherwise never get to have. I doubt there will ever be time I can afford international business, and there's no way my company will ever pay so points get me the chance to see the pointy end and upstairs.

30000 points + about $100 in Taxes/Charges for Class X SYD-BNE-HKG-SYD (on special, 40% off!) in Year 2002. I don't think I can ever get that again!

As soon as QF advertised that they were flying from Sydney to San Francisco I booked a return J class ticket next year (182K), and if necessary I think it would be worth slightly more (not too much) just to NOT fly into LAX.

Although not related to Qantas, in 2001 after I separated from my spouse I booked a F class return ticket from SYD-SFO-SEA with United, using Ansett points (200K which only left me 6K). Although I wanted to be away 4 weeks I could only get award flights for 3 weeks. However, as I was due to return on Sept 11 (and we all know what happened then) all the airports were closed and when I rang United and they saw I was flying F they booked me a F seat the following week. It was at that time that Ansett ceased also, but they still flew me back in F.

My best use of points was 125,000 for a Concorde round trip from London to New York plus , of course, the 37,500 points for an 11,000 Km business trip round Australia

Dave

A couple qualify here:

1. NTL-BNE(Y) BNE-HTI(J) return for our honeymoon.

2. NTL-SYD(Y) SYD-NDI (J) return for a break in July this year.

3. NTL-SYD(Y) SYD-SIN-FCO (J) FCO-MIL-VCE-FCO (Y) FCO-SIN-SYD(J) SYD-NTL (Y) for Mrs Shillard's mum, basically as a "thank you" for being a kick-cough MIL.

Best ever points burn (value for money) would be 12,000 Amex points to get 10 movie passes - we recieved 50 movie passes, along with the covering notes addressed to four other card members who had ordered 10 movie passes. Gold!!!!!!!!!

If you do there will need to be a major glitch in the QF award booking software or you will not be flying QF. :D

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Actaully, this jogs my memory :? .

Did myself and mrs serfty MEL-SIN-xSYD-MEL for a long weekend on an 50,000 point 2 for 1. i.e. 25,000 each. Back then Qantas QF31 left MEL ~2:30am daily and had very light loads, hence this special. (Restricted to QF31/QF32)

Obviously this was an effort to encourage PAX to use the service. Did not work however, as after our booking was made, QF31 & QF32 were routed away from MEL. So we were re-routed QF9, QF6 & QF2.

Isn't that a 60,000 point award. :? Would have to be discounted by ~60% to be 25,000 points.
