The 13 worst tourism traps in the world | News.com.au

It happens to most people at some point in their travels.

You arrive at the most-hyped part of your trip, take a photo, look around, and are struck with the thought: "Is that it?".

While some of the most popular tourist attractions absolutely live up to the hype, others are simply underwhelming.

Here are 13 tourist traps so overrated you may want to skip them altogether, according to travel website Wanderlust.co.uk.

Do note that the list was compiled by a UK company, so it may differ significantly to the Australian taste. That said, one of the selections on the list was rather anti-patriotic, but may be in agreement by many.

What do you think are the worst tourist traps around the world (or even in Australia)?

Wow. I've been to most of the places on the list and I couldn't disagree more.

One place in Australia that I was underwhelmed with is Byron Bay. Just like Lorne, but with hippies, bad coffee and slightly warmer water. Definitely over-hyped.

Some of the statues I may agree that they are underwhelming but the Grand Canyon, get off the grass.

And I didn't realize how important that clock at Prague was, I might have to go back there some day in the future.

Fair dinkum, the Louvre? The most amazing gallery in the entire world? The place I spent an entire day, after doing the "big three"?

So I am not the only one that didn't like it , completely overated in my book.

How is the entire city of London a tourist trap

Only one city I've been to that could fill that criteria IMO and that is Rome.

What a load of cough. Everybody has their reasons for visiting a place and with a bit of research you should know ahead of time what you're going to see.

There are several listed there that I have been to and disagree with, for example:

The Statue of Liberty, I reckon if you're disappointed here then life is pretty sad. I found it a wonderful spectacle and did the free tour which explained how it came into being and its history. A great day.

The Great Wall of China Done with a good guide it is a great spectacle and well worth going to see.

Surely no-news can purchase better cough than this to publish?

What a pointless list - it is all down to personal taste of course but even you haven't been somewhere just looking at the post card doesn't quite convey it.

Mind you I have no interest in Las Vegas for the reasons in the article.

Perhaps slightly off topic, but one of my sons camped under the Great Wall when he was on a pre-season trip with the Melbourne Football Club (he's their Media Manager). Not exactly life changing for him, but something he will never forget.

Yup, Las Vegas would possibly the last place in the world I would visit.

The clock is quite ok, better than a statue - just be the with the hoards a little before the hour, watch it for the 10 minutes or so, then wander off to find a feed, a beer or both (plenty of it in Prague ... :p)

Have been to a few of the places in that list (Las Vegas, Great Wall, Mannekin Pis, London, Astronomical Clock) and the only one I was really dissapointed by was London. I'd say that most of the criticisms of London are valid. Definitly overpriced and I didn't find much that interested me. If it wasn't the centre of the Anglophone world, I think its reputation would be a lot lower than its current status. Certianly wouldn't be any issue about expanding Heathrow at any rate. Whilst I admit that taste is a personal thing, I've done similar short trips on the way to Ireland in several European cites that I felt were all much more interesting and better value for money than London (Berlin, Budapest, Prague, Brussels).

Some of the others are a bit unfair while reflecting on the understandably UK centric viewpoint of the article. Mannekin Pis is a good example. It really is just a small, quirky piece of public art while while fun and histroic, isn't worth going to Brussels in itself. Certainly anyone who took a four hour round journey on Eurostar just to see it would be disappointed. This clearly wouldn't apply to Australians since I don't think anyone, even those with endless free time and money, would contemplate a minimum 25 hour journey just to see a tiny fountian. This applies as well to the Astronomical Clock, which is lovely but is only one attraction of the city it resides in.

I love Las Vegas, but I can definietly understand the viewpoint of simongr and Blinky. While it does offer a bit more than just gambling and parties, it is still a place that is strongly targeted towards particular demographics in a way this is likely to lead to a black and white view of the city. The bit on the Great Wall however is a joke. It's truly a wonder of the world and is a must for any trip to China. Given that it's a few thousand kilometers long, it's not to hard to avoid the more touristy sections if you really want, although the authorities seem to have really cracked down on hawkers harassing tourists in recent times (comparing my trip last year to when I went in 1997) so even there the main issue should be the crowds.

I would like to see your 10 best tourist item list

Wow, who took a dump in the "author's" corn flakes?

Stonehenge - I still get goose bumps thinking about the first time I crested the hill and saw those stones just sitting there in a paddock. Can't wait until my kids are old enough to take them to see them
The Colosseum - Are you kidding me? One of the highlights of my life was the half day I spent walking around that place. True, the Roman Forum was actually better, but you could seriously fell the history seeping out of the walls of the Colosseum.
Las Vegas - Where do I start? Where else can you have a game of high stakes poker, eat until you explode at a ridiculously good buffet, shoot a couple of automatic weapons (legally) and get a serious fill of people watching, all in one day?
The Grand Canyon - I seriously doubt that this guy has visited the canyon. I don't know how anybody could visit without being rendered speechless by the sheer beauty and amazed by just how bloody big it is.

To be honest, I reckon this article was written purely to garner angry responses ... and I've fallen right into the trap.

I don't disagree with some of the entries on the list - but the style of writing is horrible.
