looking at flights syd/madrid early to mid june , return mid july.
found good priced seats with thai...however wouldnt mind others opinion of their business class.

Looks like the 747-400 out of sydney and the 777 from brisbane...can anyone here compare from experience?....also are the 747 seats now the newer ver. 2?

Thai seems to be the best value with business class seats at less than $6k...which when booking and paying for 6 people is quite reasonable...only decent comparable would be Korean...but their flights take much longer with waiting times etc

Thanks jc

TG were good. We went MEL FCO x3. The 777 is far superior to the 747. 2-3-2. Lovely cabin good service and good value.

Fully agree with Sprucegoose. TG offers fantastic service and their J is comparable to some of the best in the industry.

I was on the upper deck of the TG 747 recently and there is nothing wrong with it. I believe it is the new product and it is comparable to the A340 if not better.

And TG service is more than satisfactory. I would not describe it as fantastic though.

I think this is a slightly misleading statement. Thai has 4 variants of the 777 all with different layouts/seats in business class. 777-300ER (herringbone full flat), 777-300 (2-3-2 angled layflat type 1), 777-200ER (2-2-2 angled layflat type 1), 777-200 (2-2-2 angled layflat type 2). The layflat type 2 was definitely better than type 1. Type 2 is also the type that is on the 747 (except for the all-series aircraft which you would have to be unlucky to get and should have been refitted by the time you travel) and their A340 aircraft. So don't travel out of Brisbane, stay out of Sydney.

At the following link you can view the main 2 types of layflat that Thai have. They don't show the herringbone flat J seats. THAI Services - In Flight : Cabin / Seat Features

The issue with Thai is that the aircraft they use on routes changes all the time, hence the saying of getting TG'd. I recently completed a trip and below is my review I posted on flyertalk regarding the seats. It is below. If you have any other questions let me know.

Trip report

I recently completed a trip on the following Thai flights all in Business Class with a friend. Service was brilliant on all of the flights, but the seat on the last flight was very average. The first three flights the seat definitely went flat (but at the angle), though not when you pushed the 'flat' button which is crazy. You had to manually play (out, in, out, in until it goes completely flat) with the controls to get it as flat as it could go. Once flat it was very easy to sleep on with no 'slipping' occurring.

On the last flight (BKK-MEL) though there was no way I could get the seat to go flat, the foot rest part was some silly spring loaded thing that wouldn't stay in the one place, luckily we were dead tired and went straight to sleep, but still definitely a very average seat. The massive wide aisles on the 777 were great though. The amount of space is incredible and it just seems crazy with that amount of space that it isn't a fully flat bed rather than the average one they have at the moment.

I have to say that the food was also very good with some nice red wines which I wasn't expecting.

As as side point LAX TBIT has to be one of the worst airport terminals I have been to! It is a pity that Thai is canning the direct BKK-LAX service as I could have seen myself using it again in the future. The flight times actually flew by.
