Hi

I am travelling from Brisbane to LAX next month and my flight gets in at 7am. I am taking another flight at 11am and I need to get from Terminal 4 to Terminal 1. I have heard horror stories about Terminal 1, and I'm looking for tips to make the process easier:

1. What is the best way of getting from T4 to T1? I have heard that the shuttle bus runs every 15 minutes, but if you walk quickly you can get from T4 to T1 in that time yourself.

2. Is it true that the lines at T1 are so long that they stretch around outside?! Will 4 hrs be enough between flights for me to make my US Airways flight? Thanks for any tips!

Thanks! Luggage was going to be my next question.

When I went through LAX last year, I went through Customs, picked up my baggage at the carousel, then dumped it at a luggage drop-off point nearby. However, I didn't check whether this drop off point was for ALL luggage tagged through to passangers' final destinations, or just American Airlines and Qantas luggage (both of which were in T4, where I had landed).

It would made things a heck of a lot easier if I didn't have to re-check my baggage and could just take carry-on to T1. Does anyone know if this is possible - can Qantas check my lugggage through the whole way, and can I drop it off at T4 even though I'm leaving from T1?

I have done the T4 - T1 connection twice at Lax, both times from QF93 arriving at ~7:30.

The first time we walked with luggage across to Southwest at terminal 1 and caught a 10am flight quite easily, although the queue was quite long. The second time was again walking to US Airways @ T1 - we landed at 8:15 and made our 12pm flight (spending 1hr+ in the US Airways lounge). The queues weren't THAT long (they were reasonable...).

As you are departing from Terminal 1, I assume you are probably flying with South West Airlines (WN). I don't know for sure, but would be surprised if QF and WN have a baggage interlining agreement. WN is a classic Low Cost Carrier model and that generally means they do not interline with other airlines.

The only way to leave you luggage at the LAX arrival terminal following customs clearance is if the bags have already been tagged to your next destination. QF will do that for you at check-in time only if the onward airline has an interlining agreement with QF. A phone call to QF reservations will confirm if they can tag you bags for an onward WN flight.

If QF cannot interline your bags, then you are going to need to use the shuttle bus. Note that the traffic moves around the horseshoe of terminals in a counter-clockwise manner, so a pick-up from Terminal 4 will next go past Terminal 5 then, then 7 and then across to Terminal 1 to start the loop again. Terminals 4 and 1 are at opposite corners of the loop and is the longest walk between any of the terminals at LAX.

Yes, Terminal 1 queues for WN check-in and security can be long and it is possibly worst at the time of day you are arriving, so do plan for some delays. 4 hours should be ample.

The next flight is on US Airways but I am not sure if they have interline baggage arrangements with QF.

I expect QF and US will have an interline agreement. QF used to codesahre with US and they have just ended their lounge relationship. US is a full-service carrier (and I use that term very loosely when discussing airlines from the LOTFAP) and QF interlines with most full-service carriers.

Thanks very much for the replies. I am flying US Airways, so I'll ring Qantas tomorrow and see if they can check them all the way through.
