Temper Tantrum Over Hand Luggage

Just reading the Bangkok Post and a story caught my eye regarding an AirAsia flight.

Seems a passenger threw a temper tantrum, and I actually mean "threw" - he tossed his offending suitcase out of the cabin onto the Tarmac, after the crew refused the oversized luggage on board.

It's caused a bit of an uproar over here - he's been criticised up and down the country after appearing on a talk show.

Seems whilst he may have apologised, it is felt he misses the point regarding his irresponsible actions which delayed the flight and inconvenienced everyone on the domestic service.

If everyone with oversized hand luggage did this on my regular CBR - MEL - CBR trip there would be dozens of bags littering the tarmac..

now this is funny as!

you should see the hand luggage they bring on the syd to mel or mel to syd QF flights far out enough to hold about 20 cats

Most of my flights are HLO and my little case couldn't be more than 3.5c (ISO standard Australian moggie) capacity so hopefully not one for Vertisol's FOD pile at CBR.

Hand luggage should be about size of the bag, not the weight. The problem is when it's too big, there's less space left for other people.

I'm fearful to say, but the "cat" unit of measurement may be obsolete after a few legs in South America, although we might be able to use kilocat (or killa-cat). I'm fairly sure the cargo hold now encompasses the cabin; but the classic was the guy who loudly complained on the MEX to DFW flight that the overhead lockers were too small on the 737 as his third bag could not fit in!!!

Interestingly, Thai Visa posters are now reporting that latest news reports state that the case was empty and maybe it was only a publicity stunt by Air Asia.... who knows what the truth really is?
I have counted the number of seats and the number of available storage lockers and worked out that if everyone brought carry on luggage that had to be stowed then there would not be sufficient room to do so.
Are airlines taking a punt that not everyone will have carry on luggage and is this responsible planning when there may be a higher cost for checking in excess?

Probably expect you to also use the teensy weeny space under the seat in front of you as well - say goodbye to your legroom. ;)
