I have to be in the US (Houston) for business in October. I finish up there on the Sunday evening, and my flight out of LA is on Friday night. I've been to the US a few times already and have 24 states ticked off, but happy to revisit places. I also have a slight preference for somewhere with a beach. So, tell me where I should go.

In October and wanting a beach it has to be the south.A few years ago we stayed at Marco Island on the Florida gulf coast.Really enjoyed it and had close encounters with dolphins whilst swimming.I naturally did a TR but it was BP(before pictures!).

Posts 38-40 are the Florida portion of that trip.
As well as the beach there is some good outlet shopping and if you do the drive from Orlando there is the Morse museum in Orlando which has a large collection of Tiffany. In St.Petersburg a very good Dali Museum.

Outside USA OK?

How about Cancun, Mexico? Beaches aplenty, warm sea and you can take an easy day tour of the Chitchen Itza Mayan site and others in the area.

There is so much to see, even when you've been 15 times or so.

I'd hire a car, pay the one way fee and drive back to LAX.

I knocked over 22 states doing a west to east drive, not sure I'm so keen to do it again :p And yes, there is plenty to see...too many decisions!

I'd be heading for The Bahamas or Cuba

Tried to squeeze one of them in on our last trip however, we couldn't do it justice with the amount of time we had spare.

San Antonio looks fantastic.....if you end up with a day or two spare.

Any fares from Miami for quick cheap status run in a single day returning back to Miami is it doable. Sorry I ask but very novice at this still. My Lax to OHR run cost me an 80 SC ! Just by re-routing

Note that currently is seems most of the deep discounted first/business fares don't have much availability loaded until within 4 months of the travel. On that basis, if you were looking for a mid October date, you would need to wait until after mid June before researching/booking.

Yest, certainly road trips aren't for everyone, but I can drive those western states every holiday there is so much to see along the way and for me it's relaxation. :D
