My wife has a friend travelling from Sydney to Ballina/Byron to get married. She wants to take her wedding flowers on the Virgin Blue flight, but has not been able to get any clarification from the airline. Is it OK to take flowers on a plane? I have never done so.

Certainly should be able to.We have travelled with orchids from Bangkok and a wedding bouquet from the USA.At quarantine they were inspected and put under the magic light and we were on our way.As your travel is wholly within NSW I couldnt see a problem.

The last time I took flowers on a flight (around 8 years ago), the only thing I noticed was that the life of the flowers shortened dramatically... something about the air on the plane.

Last week I took a rather large wedding cake from Adelaide to Cairns (on JQ) and it received VIP treatment.
AFAIK at least some of the wedding flowers were brought back to Adelaide from Cairns.
In my experience, cabin crew are generally happy to accommodate "special occasions".
I was on the same flight as a wedding party recently and the crew was very helpful stowing two very large wedding dresses.
I'm fairly confident you wife's friend will have no problems. Assuming of course that they're not likely to dribble water out of the overhead lockers.
