I need some advise re redemption booking with Singapore Airlines. When I have made a redemption booking with malaysia airlines they usually confim the booking straight away and then I have a few days to transfer my Altitude points (Westpac) across. Singapore airlines will not confirm the booking until I have the points in the krisflyer account. How easy is it to get a redemption booking with Singapore Airlines as I dont want to tranfer the points and then find I can get a seat. The actual booking would probably be with their partner airline United as it is a Syd to NY flight. Any advise would be appreciated.

As with any frequent flyer award redemption, availability is limited and dependent on many factors, including:
  • Date of travel and your flexibility
  • Class of travel you are seeking
  • Routing flexibility
Using SQ krisFlyer miles/points for an award on Star Alliance carriers you have quite a few options, including UA, SQ, TG, NZ, OZ and combinations. So I would expect that so long as you are not seeking First Class redemption, or multiple business class seats on the same flights, and are flexible with dates and not travelling in peak demand periods, are flexible with airline and routing, you should be able to find a combination of awards that will get you from Sydney to New York.

thanks NM. Singapore Air has said that a UA flight Syd to NY return would be a redemption of 140000 miles for business class.I need 2 tickets so 280000.
Malaysia airlines Syd to London return is 145000 and I would then have a book with a partner airline to NY return to Lodnon. They said they do the booking fro London to NY but I have to find the flight I want and the airline. Does that sound right ? How would I know which airlines would require the least amount of points for London to NY.

Sorry if I sound completely vague about this as I really have no idea how to work this all out !!

When I have booked to the states I have first used the ANA website which shows the Star Alliance redemption availability. Pollywaffle was trying to do a similar booking to you and a link to the ANA Tool and instructions can be found http://www.australianfrequentflyer....ing-star-alliance-award-redemption-21215.html.

My approach is as follows:

1. Search via ANA Tool.
2. Identify the itinerary and be explicit to SQ on which flights are needed.
3. If I don't need a stopover on the journey, I book it as 2 x one-way redemptions.

Also, consider the time that the journey involves if you are going to NYC via Europe. If no stopover along the way, it is a long journey via Europe in flying hours and total transit time.
