Sydney Morning Herald article on cheap business class tickets to Europe from Asia

I could be biased, but it's just a poor man's version of this: https://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/strategies-cheap-business-class-europe/

All it does is quote Business class fares from Australia, and then give a couple of examples of cheaper fares from certain ports such as MNL, KUL and DPS. TLDR, SMH says you can save by purchasing Business Class from Australia - Asia, and then Asia to Europe.

It also doesn't really mention the risks involved of buying separate tickets, and also doesn't mention that airlines mostly put their worst J cabins on many of the flights out of cheaper destinations (MNL-DXB for example, it's EK's 777 angle flat in a 2-3-2). It also says flights are "direct" when they are 1 stop with different flight numbers.

It also ignores some airline's pricing completely - it uses a $9300 Thai flight as an example, but conveniently ignores the $5300 Air India flights or other Thai flights which price at $7300, both of which are in the same "mid September - mid October" date range.

I know it's not what you asked for, but IMO it'd be more educational to read the AFF article.

If you missed the article, you didn't miss much at all. It probably brings value to those who book ex-Australia flights out of old habit. For those, it introduces the idea of ex-Asia tickets and positioning yourself separately. The narrative in the article was a little bit all over the place and lacked any clear examples of "this is what it could like for a Melbourne-Lisbon or Perth-Glasgow trips" with a little breakdown and prices. Reading the respective AFF articles and posts puts you on the map a lot quicker and better (plus the brainpower in the forum is an awesome add-on).

While it’s true there is an Australian penalty for booking Oz to Europe flights, and it can be cheaper from other ports in Asia, or even returns stating in Europe, the figures they quote are misleading, some one way, some return, some just confused.
