Sydney domestic down

Terminal 2 at Sydney closed

T2 at Sydney closed due to major power outage.

VA advising pax not to go to airport if flying either into or out of Sydney today.

Better find some accommodation for tonight quickly.

Qantas services from T3 Sydney domestic terminal are unaffected by the power outage at T2. Customers should travel to the airport as normal.

Nice on Red Roo, your competitors are copping the brunt of it

Some of the early reports simply said Sydney Airport rather than specifically T2 (aka VA / JQ / TT) and telling people not to go to the airport full stop. It is more than likely that a QF pax or two got confused and thought that it was all airlines and have followed the do not go to the airport advice. Therefore it's entirely appropriate that Red Roo has mentioned that they are unaffected and people booked on QF services should still go to the airport.

I'm flying on QF metal tonight from BNE-MEL on QF635, but my friend is travelling from Sydney 7ish this evening on VA. My friend is platinum so here's hoping VA will look after him, otherwise it's a long wait for me as I'm staying at his place. Now who says QF customers are not affected by this bru ha ha. These things happen. Heart goes out to those affected.

T2 seems to have recovered well, little evidence of the prior chaos, apart from some interesting QF fares.

In fairness to QF, it is start of school holidays in (at least) NSW and QLD. How do the interesting fares compare to what they were prior to 9am today?

I would say they have the appearance of going up since all the cheap fares in the cheap buckets would have been snapped up asap.

Yep, airline nirvana, demand for the last seats, with Y $600 for SYD BNE, first flight avail at 6PM

While the strong winds in MEL might be a contributing factor (i.e. not just this morning's SYD T2 power failure), at 2100 there's still a lot of Sydney - Melbourne or vice versa delayed flights of between half an hour and more than an hour. QF is affected, although not quite as much as VA.

JQ528 (VH-VWT), VA891 (VH-VUK) and TT282 (VH-VHR), all MEL - SYD flights, appear to be breaching the 2300 hours SYD curfew tonight with touchdown times forecast as 2302, 2309 and amazingly 2321 respectively. There is a very strong north wind in MEL tonight (with Australia's official weather forecasts & weather radar - Bureau of Meteorology suggesting that the temperatire at MEL 'feels like' below zero.)

A TT outbound flight to MEL also took off at about 2310. This may be a record number of (approved) breaches for the past year.

The 'delegate' must be in a very good mood this evening.

When it came on the news I had it on mute and couldn't work out what was wrong or different haha :)

Pics where the same as a normal day - the budget terminal T2 full as a barnyard with 'interesting' looking people doing manual old fashioned check in! (NGCI VIRGIN PLEASE!)

Then I turned the sound on and heard about the power cut.... ;) ;)

Excuse my naivety and maybe a silly question....but can the airlines seek compensation (from loss of income/extra operating costs/damage to brand), from the owners of T2? Because most travellers will blame the airlines(VA,JQ,REX), ...not the airport.
