Am looking at the QF website and am unable to clarify if the Sydney - Bangkok - HK leg involves having the choice of stopping in Bangkok for a few days? Will be grateful for feedback if you've done this before and if QF charges extra for that priviledge.

IIRC the fare conditions can be seen when viewing flight options, eg clicking on Red E Deal, Flex etc
 
Try booking it as a multicity and see!
 
Given QF doesn't fly BKK-HKG, they will need to put you on CX, I expect it will cost more than direct.

Yes, and CX charges like a wounded bull on that route (at least in J), and the product is not great. The 777 with the "regional" fit out is pretty basic - even in J.

If you want to spend time in BKK, then for the BKK-HKG leg I would be thinking about Royal Jordanian (for OW) or Emirates. Or you could just go direct to HKG of course.

10 days ago though HKG-BKK was one of their new A330s which has much better seating in J than QF SYD-BKK-SYD.

Yes, a CX long-haul A330 is a great product. Well done for scoring that! I think the short-haul regional product is norm on that route though. Actually I think it is HKG-BKK-SIN and return route to be exact.
 
pick the fkight that is goingto/coming from India for the 330.
 
CX throw everything and anything at the BKK-HKG route including the Airbus A340-300. If you select an A340 flight you are guaranteed the older style herringbone angled lie flat long haul product.

I tried to book BKK-SYD on Expedia.br on the weekend and the cheapest option for me was to go BKK-HKG-SYD and it cost no more to add 2 days in HKG. Was much cheaper than the direct route - I was booking in January though so availability was limited but it might be worth a look. I just did a multi-city booking.
