Totally depends.
Do you want QFF points, do you just want the cheapest fare....

A oneworld ticket can be useful for RTW, particularly in Business/First but Australia is not a cheap starting point and if only doing three stops can probably be bettered point to point, particularly if wanting to use LCCs

LCCs - Low cost carriers

eg. Scoot/ Jetstar to Singapore, Air Asia X to KL.
A cheap Euro/Asian to Athens.
Something across to NY.
Maybe an AA YUP/KUP to HNL (lots of QF SCs this way)
Jetstar back home

An Economy RTW is generally $3.5k plus. I suspect you can do better point to point.

I think we will still prefer to do CX/QF...etc with economy ticket. How does the muti-city works?

where can i search for cheap prices on tickets?

I think you'll find that if you don't want to book a simple round the world ticket, that you;re best off speaking to a travel agent to arrange the point to point travel for this type of trip.

You could also have a look at possibilities on ITA. It's a useful site to work out multi-city itineraries.

About a year or so ago Qantas had a "sort of" RTW fare available. It was only available through travel agents.

From memory my route was SYD-SIN-LHR-JFK-LAX-MEL-SYD with stops in SIN, LHR, JFK and LAX. Cost was in the $2k region. Might be worth checking something like bestflights.com.au to see if something similar appears. Just had a quick look and something similar appears to be available right through to next year:
