At What point do we toughen up and tell people who buy a house near an airport or train line that it will be noisy ant airport was there first?

The political difficulty, particularly with airports, comes when there are proposed changes to what was occurring previously.

Then some residents or businesses say 'well, I was aware that it would be noisy with 40 movements per hour but with 50 it will become unbearable.'

You can tell them that if you don't change the flight paths and increase noise levels.

A lot of Sydney airport electorates are now safe labor seats federally I thinl so it may yet come to pass...

I have sympathy for those living under busy flight paths. However, there is nothing remotely new in airports and flight paths becoming busier nor in flight paths changing.

Same with roads - people living close to major or 'main' road corridors should know that they can be widened, and get busier and noisier and even a new alignments put in, creating road noise where it didn't exist before.

These are some of the downsides of living in a big city, countering a few of the many advantages.

I disagree, right now IMO it would be very stupid to think that there won’t be pressure for most airports to get busier, so if you buy a house under a flight path ( next to a train line , main road ,live music venue, or many other things) it is your risk.

Would it not be ridiculous if in the future Melbourne needs a curfew because people decide to build houses closer?

This thread is about SYD not MEL but if I may briefly say so, the possibility of MEL requiring a curfew was discussed a bit in mainstream media some months ago but lately has not again raised its head.

The curfew possibility for MEL is usually raised by the geniuses that bought homes near MEL.

My parents bought 43 years ago. Not that close to the airport but for a number of years when the flight paths were changed by the then Federal Liberal government the noise levels were unbearable. My room would shake when the aircraft were coming in to land above. I was calling complaints almost daily.

Our street in 1974 was just a suburban street. Now it is a very busy road at all times of the day. They are putting up more and more medium-to-high density apartments which is only going to make the traffic worse.

Yes it is city living but we should have been smarter and built infrastructure to expand outwards instead of making people live on top of each other. Think we would have learnt from the other cities in the world that have the same issues? Nope....
