From News: Sydney airport ranks as one of Australia's worst | NEWS.com.au

Based on ACCC findings:

FOR the second year in a row Sydney Airport has ranked below every other major capital city in Australia for service quality.

For a fifth straight year Brisbane was judged as Australia's best airport. Adelaide ranked equal first, followed by Perth and Melbourne.

A report by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission confirmed the complaint of many Sydneysiders, that its international gateway was a giant money drain.

..and I did not realise Jetstar had a reputation for on-time performance:

Meanwhile, Jetstar's reputation for punctuality was boosted by yesterday's release of official figures showing its planes left on time more often than Qantas and Virgin Blue.

well, this hardly a surprise.

Curfews, delays, traffic to/from, prices etc etc etc it's not hard to see why.

SYD would have to be one of my least favourite airports in the world (LAX is probably worse)

Agreed!

What is a surprise though, is that PER is right up there. Either the figures are askew or there are some really bad airports that I'm unaware of :!:

PER rated higher than SYD? Hmmm....

I think these types of surveys need to be taken with a huge grain of salt.

Personally I do not think there is anything wrong with SYD. I can be in the lounge as early as 10 minutes from the time I check-in , through immigration, security and all duty free shops. How many international airports of that size in the world can boast the same efficiency?

Domestically. Most :!:
Internationally. Who knows :!:

You know John i think we also know our way around and are rather fast out of a plane, dont have questions thought security and have all our LAG's etc sorted out.

MEL this morning was a ZOO !!! a QF, QF, EK and who knows what else all landed at the same time, yet i was through in not much more than 10 mins, only 2 people at the smart gate (compared to hundreds at the normal counters, the past track looked like ti would take much longer than regular chekcing as well) and customs quick look at my landing card and waved through straight out.
If i had no idea what i was doing, not prepared for anything it would have been 1hr i would think.

For me SYD is ok, PER is pretty bad (only the transfer between International <-> Domestic)

Some people say PVG is a mess for example but my luck i have hardly ever queued and been through without issues a dozen times in the last 18 months.

I guess its also luck and landing time.

I think you are right on this point. I just don't understand why SYD continually gets low votes. Maybe I am being biased.

With PER if ignoring the terminal transfer it still does not have much to offer. Immigration does not open until 90 minutes before the flight and the same for the Qantas Lounge. Not a lot to do if you have a little more time to spare.

I love SIN and BKK and for me LHR in just 3 visits is the pits. In the US I found LAX to be OK and ORD and STL were very nice. Another airport that looks quite nice is HEL.

I tracked down the actual ACCC report, which is instructive in what it set out to do (price and service quality at airports - also it had a focus on what was under the direct control of the airport operator)

Airport monitoring report for price monitored airports; Quality of service, price monitoring and financial reporting 2006–07

In the context of what the ACCC was reporting on, it makes more sense (and a lot of this did not come out in the news article). In particular, it does not seem that the areas that Qantas control at airports like Perth were included.
