go card deposit is refundable:Because transport is a state responsiblity and some states (im looking at you Qld) like to charge you to buy their transport card.

Those requirements are possibly mutually exclusive! But if you’re happy to catch the light-rail (with stop outside racecourse), then pretty much anything from Circular Quay, thru to Central station, Surry Hills and onwards is in play.… close proximity to Randwick Racecourse…

It’s sped up a bit but yes, avoiding the CBD stretch is advisable. Starting from Central or Surry Hills is probably ok. About 20 mins to the racecourse (v 10 mins by car going against traffic).Just beware that it is very slow
