I've got 40 mins to do the qf syd Domestic to international shuttle, is that definitely long enough?

I would allow at least a hour, allowing for a delay on the incoming flight and clearing customs/immigration.

I doubt 40 mins would be a legal connection for SYD. I always make sure I have at least one hour and a half but usually 120 mins so that I can have at least a little time in the FLounge. ;-)

Assuming you mean you have 40min between when your flight lands, and International flight departs - then the answer is a solid No.

The minimum legal Dom to Int minimum connection time (MCT) at SYD is 60min, with longer exceptions for specific flights requiring a between a 75min to 120min MCT.

Below is the GDS published MCT output for QF-QF connections at SYD, including exceptions for specific flight numbers. This information is dated Sept 2010, and is not likely to have changed.

You can find MCT for other Australian airports in this flyertalk post. NZ MCTs available from here.

I've got 40 mins to do the qf syd Domestic to international shuttle, is that definitely long enough?
fly by wire,

The short answer is no.

A couple of weeks ago I had a three hour connection in SYD. Our flight from MEL to SYD was two hours late which of course left us one hour from arrival at domestic until the international was due to depart. We transferred as quickly as possible, went straight to the gate and were amongst the last to get on the international flight.

No F lounge time :!: :( :(

I have struggled to make a 2-and-a-half hour Dom-Int connection at SYD. Whilst this is probably the exception rather than the rule, and if on the same PNR you are 'protected', missing the connection can still be a big enough inconvenience to ensure I leave a very generous connection time for such a transfer - min. 2 hours if possible (yes, I'm cautious - I'd rather wear a planned 2+ hour connection than an unplanned 24-hour delay).

Oh, sorry, to answer your actual question (funny how we get OT), I don't think 40 mins would cut it, even if was a 'legal' MCT, which from a previous post, it appears not to be.

Thanks for all the informative posts guys. It was for a friend and I have since confirmed it is exactly 1hr change and the BNE-lax is on the one booking. In addition to the above the other way I look at it is if your bag is checked all the way through it's going to be ON the next flight and they will wait the extra 10mins worst case before having to dive in and pull your bag off

Both of my last two transfers have had 70 mins between scheduled domestic landing and international departure.

Both times now I've had to skip the lounge  and go straight to the gate.

Qantas start boarding most of their International flights out of SYD ~40 minutes before scheduled departure and up to an hour before USA flights.

I would always try to book at least 3 hours for a transfer and maybe more. (But then I have Qantas International First Class lounge access).

At a minimum I'd allow 5-10 minutes to get to the Gate 1 bus facility, up to 10 minutes wait for the bus (20 minutes after 12pm), 10 minutes for the bus trip, 10-20 minutes for emigration, 5-10 minutes to reach the gate and 40-60 minutes for boarding.

That's between 70 and 120 minutes with no budget for lounge time.

I would certainly not be comfortable with a 1hr connection. I would be doing whatever it takes to get moved to an earlier BNE-SYD flight.

Do not assume that a checked bag means you make the flight. Itcan take longer for bags to transfer between terminals than for passengers. I have had several occasions where I have made the transfer but my bags did not make it (Sydney and other airports).

Look at the consequences of missing the flight. Is there another SYD-LAX departure later in the day? or will it mean overnighting in SYD and getting into LAX a day late?

The other thing is your bag. You need at least an hour to guarantee that they make it even if you do. Happen 3 times now on the way home with 1.5 hours
