SYD transfer travelling to DFW in F

Maybe I am just naive (in fact when it comes to F, I am definitely naive) but I thought with an F booking fully paid for (even though it was a first saver fare) I would have been able to change it willy nilly for nothing.
Anyway, I'm happy now. Will be a pain getting up at 2.30am (I live a 75-minute drive to Tulla in good traffic), but it's not like it won't be worth it.

Next time (if there is one) suggest stay overnight in SYD.

I really don't see the point of wasting money on SYD hotel when flight scheduled at 1pm.
You can comfortably catch the 8am MEL-SYD and have plenty of time to enjoy the Flounge.

Nice. Thank you. Now if only I could get through. Just tried phoning again and it said it was a wait of 40 minutes. I;m too exhausted to hold for that long. Might see if I can ring in the middle of the night.

Have you went online today?
You might be able to get through with online chat.

Can I also say that I think it's pretty poor that an F passenger can't get through on the phone, very poor actually.

I agree though waking up at 2.30 am to catch a flight is not exactly my cup of tea either.

Why wake up so early? It's Melbourne not Shanghai :) traffic not that bad. I used to live there and drive to airport few times a week in pick morning traffic. For 75 min normal ride I wouldn't leave home before 5am for an 8am domestic departure.

Id make 2 points:

yes it's a nice lounge, but it's an airport lounge. You eat, get a 20 min spa treatment and relax for a bit and the thrill is done. How much extra time do you want to sit in a lounge for? 2 hrs is a long time sitting in a lounge, even the awesome QF F lounge

secondly, don't forget if you fly on a peak hour flight from MEL, esp on a Monday, you have that nightmare traffic to deal with getting into the airport. Do you really want to wake up that early just to sit in the lounge? just saying.....

2 hours is about right.. I've done it numerous times and you get enough time to sit down, have a drink then a meal then a few more drinks and then it's time to board.. i'd rather have an extra hour up my sleeve than be running late!

I agree but that's what Justinf said he would ?have? to do As per post #60

Maybe because OPs flight departs at 6.00am, and he wants to catch that flight.

I've read a few sad tales here lately about people not factoring enough time for unexpected delays on the road. Relax in the J lounge for an hour before the flight.

Read the posts again in correct order. I replied to your post where you said next time stay in SYD by saying an 8am flight leaves plenty of time for the Flounge so no need to waste money on hotel in SYD and the conversation went on from there.

Obviously I wouldn't suggest leaving home at 5am for 6am departure...

The West Gate is a nightmare. I am 20 minutes the other side of Geelong. There are roadworks going on in peak hour morning traffic.
I am also a compulsive planner and like to leave plenty of time. One accident or a downpour of rain can turn the West Gate from a hellhole into Satan's playground. I also like to leave my car at A1 Airport parking and get a wash and interior clean as well.
I'll stick to leaving at 3.15am, hopefully get A1 at 4.30am, and be checking in at 5am at the latest and then get a coffee in the J lounge prior to departure.

Have selected 1A but open to suggestions as to which is the best F seat on the A380, bearing in mind that 2K and 3A have already been taken.
1A is my husband's favourite seat. He likes the private feel. I tried it and prefer 2A - just tiny little quibbles. There is a cupboard opposite the seat that the staff use for bits and pieces so there is a little bit of fiddling opposite you. Not much and not while you are sleeping. Also the toilet is right in front of you, so you can hear water flushing. Doesn't worry Mr FM in the slightest, but I was happy to cede 1A to him and take 2A. Really they are all good and probably you would get 5 different opinions from 10 different people.

From the seat layout, that why I chose 1A for the seclusion. Toilet flushing doesn't bother me. I have earplugs or my Bose QC20i in-ear earphones that I use.

OK, so now my next question. :p
It looks like I can request an upgrade from DFW-SYD. I have paid for J, but for 50k QF points (I have 80k) I can request an upgrade to F. Is it worth it? I will earn roughly 37k points with this return trip which would leave about 120k points if I don't upgrade.

Engine noise is much less so the other "incidentals" tend to be heard. Having said that the twinkle of glassware and cutlery is just a civilised reinforcement that you have made it albeit for a few hours.

If you're not planning any other trips where you want to upgrade then I'd definitely put the request in. I think it's worth it! Plus after flying in F on the way over, you won't want to 'slum it' in J on the way back :)

Enjoy your trip!

I'd get off the M1 at Laverton and get on to the Ring Road. Stay off the WestGate.
