Hi AFFs :)

Would appreciate your feedback on the best Y Class seating for SYD to HKG sectors.

I'm looking at VS, QF and CX in Feb 2010. CX has the best price but I'm weary of their new clamshell seating from other users comments here.

Also looking at PE on VS or QF if necessary as I'm 6 feet tall and have done 1 flight too many shoe horned into tiny economy seats. . .

Many thanks!

If you can afford the Premium Economy fare, then definitely go that path. I have not experienced VS PE, but certainly can recommend QF's and have flown it to/from HKG on a few occasions.

I highly recommend seeking out the daytime flight options if travelling in economy. They care available in both directions, with SYD-HKG being available 7 days and HKG-SYD available on some days (3 days a week I think).

Maybe you can buy (or at least request) exit rows for QF and CX? Isn't there already policy on this?

Given the height, then day flight is better option.

Hmm, I took QF128 back home, it was a night flight. Next time, I will take a day flight :) (Time permitting) .... definitely hate sleeping at night in Y.

Thanks again for the feedback....

Went with CX in the end but due to a family emergency had to take a night flight.....be warned the Olympus Y seats make it impossible to sleep if you are anything over 5 foot 5!!!

The CX Y clamshell seats are just like slouching in a chair, only automated. No doubt this will appeal to Gen Y customers.

I am not a fan of the normal CX WHY seats (a little narrower like most Asian carriers) but have not tried these new shell seats.

Are the shell seats only available on CX long haul flights? Perhaps I could try the shell seats intra-Asia somewhere. I quite like the idea of no recline but you still need some sort of comfort.

On my trip back I worked out how to sleep in them:

Put the cushion at the top of your lower back
Don't recline the seat at all (avoid the gen-y slouch)
Insert copious amounts of red wine (nice Aussie red wine!)

I won't be flying Cathay again in Y, have to say I wasn't particularly impressed with the herringbone J seats either - looked like sardines in a tin.

Also, whatever you do in Cathay, don't get a seat near the back of the cabin. You'll be kept awake all night by the attendant call alarms, which register in the rear galley.
