Cheapest I can think of quickly...

Domestic to Darwin via Jetstar or Virgin Blue or Qantas (~$300 return)
Darwin to Singapore via Tiger ($400 return)
Singapore to Frankfurt via KLM/Finnair/Malaysia Airlines ($~1200 return)

That's approx $1900, but a really awful way of travelling!!

Singapore to Frankfurt on Qantas is not really that much more either...

Actually I reckon its great way to fly.

Spend a 2 nights in Darwin downing a few coldies watching a great sunset than catch that fresh early morning flight with that Great budget airline Tiger, stay 2 nights in fantastic Singapore downing a few more coldies this time Tiger beer, then get stuck in to the Chilli crab and fish head soup yummmy, head on back to the airport with your presents that you have just brought the night before at bargain prices for who ever u are gunna meet in Frankfurt. fantastic.

MMM. Singaporean Chilli Crab! Have been hankering for some for quite a while now!

Thanks for the reminder. Maybe I have to book a similar itinerary myself for a fix!

(BTW, The routing wasn't bad due to the places visited - but rather the inconvenience of flight times, baggage allowances etc -- and of course the lack of Qantas FF points/SC's for the routing!)

Mid July is peak travel time for Europe. So most of the major carriers who can offer a through fare are going to be around the $2200 mark as you have found. OS (Austrian Airlines, formerly Lauda Airlines) has a fare of $1989 (VKSX4). MH have a fare for $2099 at that time, and GF just a few dollars more.
