I'll be travelling to the States in November and wanted to book the flight early. At this stage, best I can find is SYD-SFO-SYD on Air NZ for $1895. How does this sound? Worth hanging out for something better, or am I unlikely to find anything?

You could take a risk and hang out for V Australia to launch routes and sales in a few months.

Not sure about routes yet but SFO is as good a chance as any to be a start-up route (has VX as a possible codeshare to the east coast)

At the very least it could push prices down on the established players.

May be taking more of a chance than you're comfortable with though.

Yeah that was on my mind... but its not really a risk i want to take. I've found a fare on NZ for 1630 because i'm under 26 which seems like a good deal.

Now... next prob. I need to get from YVR-NYC and my preference is an overnight flight. I can go YVR-SEA-EWR on AS/CO for $360 or YVR-SEA-SFO-JFK on AS/AA for $340. What's turning me off is the risk of tight (ie an hour) connections during a northern winter. Other option would be the bus to SEA then CO to EWR for about $230. Can I safely connect in SEA in 1-1.5 hours? Is it a hassle entering the US from Canada, or easy enough? Also, YVR-SEA and SEA-EWR would be seperate tickets, I'd assume AS/CO interline baggage?

For me, id be booking it, it sounds like a very reaonable fare and even with competition, the price is likely to go north the longer you leave it.

Okay - I wouldn't worry about too much about weather around the YVR/SEA area. I'm living in YVR at the moment, and it's very rare to have the airport snowed in. (We only really get a few snow days per year around town usually in Dec/Jan). If you're going to be delayed, it's most likely not going to be because of the weather.
If the operator are offering a particular route for sale with 1-1.5 hour connections, if for some reason the connection is missed, the airline should look after you and put you on another flight.
You will clear US customs in Vancouver. No hassles there.
Also you will be able to interline your bags AS->CO (AS->AA as well of course)

Cheers,

Josh

Thanks Josh. Sounds like I can safely take the AS/CO then without too many concerns. I forgot about clearing immigration on the Canadian side so that solves my main point of worry.

Daniel - how about you post your entire itinerary (including cities you want stops at) so we can come up with ideas for you. At the moment, it sounds like you are cobbling together all manner of different flights/combinations which will all add to the total cost, where some form of through fare should be far better.
Cheers.

aybee,

Welcome to AFF.

That's a great suggestion as there are always plenty of 'experts' ready to pass on their opinion.
