Hi all,

i need to get back and forth from LAX and qantas availability is awful for J.

Star alliance let you fly via Asia (BKK/SIN/ICN), can I do that with qantas points on OW awards on Qantas/Cathay/Malay ?

thanks in advance for tips...

Hi dgross,
No can do. You can book it as 2 different ASA bookings AFAIK.
Long way to go via HK or any part of Asia for that matter.
If your a hight status QF, maybe give them a call and see if they can make something available for you. All depends when traveling as aw well. The J seats are snapped up VERY quickly. Usually a year in advance. Cheers

No can do? Really?

I am fairly sure you can use your QF points to fly other OW airlines as a partner award.
The only issue is that you generally need to call QF as these awards don't always appear online. It costs extra than a normal Classic award and you will have the phone assist fee

I went to ORD via NRT On points. Ring QF, pay the phone booking fee (in points). The JAL seats don't seem to appear on the QF award site.

And if you are really lucky you might even get the booking fee waved. Remember to ask!

I had no problems booking 2 x J ADL - HKG - CDG & return on Cathay using Qantas points. I did it all on line through "Award Bookings". Cathay flights appeared on the list of flights. JB

CX via HKG seems to have J award seats. Although it does cost more points it can be attractive to those for whom a direct Y flight is unpalatable!

The question does not ask if it is for a JASA or J classic.
If a classic, yes. Note the price difference between partner/QF airlines:
A bit more than the 96k points you will pay for a J classic on the non-stop QF11 or QF107, however timing and availability will also factor into the equation of "value".

ASAs can only be booked on JQ/QF flights, so AFAIK, the answer is no.
I did see a full fare JASA SYD-HNL-LAX with the HNL-LAX in Y so that doesn't really count:
