Trying to get the kids to loan me the balance, that's if they can keep it to themselves!
That sounds a great idea upgrading, the only problem I have I may fall short of 45000 pts, any suggestions just used a lot of points on a run? Will have enough for one seat.
I've found that in situations like this, getting the will out and ostentatiously hovering the pen over it while asking for a GIFT of points on the quiet works wonders. At the same time, muttering about how Fluffy the cat needs to be looked after when you pass on helps also.
Couldn't be nearer the truth, just had 2 phone calls "I have the BEST kids in the world "!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they have helped me out . now to put in a upgrade and wedded blis!

How about the not-so-conventional call up and "change booking" into F for a reasonably small amount of money trick ?
Has anybody tried this recently since the xASA changes ?

No worries, up to you of courseBut there is plenty of evidence on other threads that some (?many) of the phone agents are simply un-aware of changes in the system and are giving out mistaken info to callers. That said, I'm not sure if it was ever possible in your particular situation, but the situation with Qantas call centres at the moment is unfortunately what my fellow members of Air Canada Aeroplan do with their phone agents who often as not don't know their own system or rules. HUATAA. (Politely) Hang Up and Try Another Agent.

Will they release them for you if you're a WP ? Or is that only for straight Classic Awards ?

WP release is for Classic Awards only, not (or shouldn't) be possible to book them as an ASA
If you read the thread that Rooflyer linked to a few posts back, the upgrade to F to LA was $990 (for one person)
if you give your current flight details,I can check expertflyer to see if any P availability on your flight (or surrounding days) if you like
