Visiting Aust this coming Sep, have some questions about transfer to domestic flight in aust, hope guys can advice me on this:

I'm holding 2 seperate ticket which will provide same day connection flight:
JQ66 KUL - SYD arrived SYD T1 0610
JQ01 SYD - MEL Dep SYD T1 1345 Arrival at MEL International.

If the check in agent in KUL able to check my bag all the way to MEL, upon arrival at SYD T1, can I get my bording pass at the transfer desk inside SYD T1 & just collect my bag and clear the immigration & quarantine upon arrival at MEL international terminal.

Haven't done any transfer in aust before, advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You may or may not get both boarding passes, but for sure as SYD is the first entry in Australia you will need to clear customs and immigration.
You bags will need to be collected (regardless of if its 'courtesy' tagged for MEL).
There is a Bus transfer between the terminals, if in doubt ask staff for assistance, believe it or not they are good in AU.

Since the departure is from T1 in SYD, this is not the case. It is quite possible to tag bags through to Melbourne and to collect them at MEL International.

With it being 2 tickets on JQ, I would not bank on them providing this service and it may well be necessary to clear customs, collect bags and re-checkin

Opps, missed it was the same terminal !
If thats a domestic leg of an international flight ? then QF i know would tage through, but JQ, just need to ask and find out i think.

My guess is yes, but I have not done this type of JQi – JQi transfer before.

There is a JQi queue at the SYD T1 air-side (QF) transfer desk…therefore, there must be passengers who are arriving into SYD on international services and not clearing customs/immigration when they transfer to JQi. (If the JQ website had actually sold you that combination, then personally I would be expecting to collect my BP airside at the transfer port, but not have to clear customs/see my bags until the final port. Seems to be the service they offer NZ customers. Although I suspect, the JQ website tried to sell you onto a JQ codeshare operated by QF CityFlyer… in which case you have tried to buck the system by putting yourself on JQ1. Interesting to know how it works out.)

Be aware, that JQi has been using the star alliance side of SYD T1 for many flights recently...which may stuff you up if you don't know SYD T1 that well.

Thanks guys for the info and advice. To avoid any potential hassle and problems I guess I'll clear everything in SYD and recheck in for the my MEL flight. Thank you.

You've probably got a small complication that check-in for the JQ1 flight is likely to not open until 3 hours before your flight (ie 10:45am). They may let you check in earlier, but I'm not sure that they will due to the way Jetstar works.

Don't know what you plan to do for those ~5 hours while waiting. There is a bag storage place available at Syd airport if you want to jump into town for a wander around during the time.

Baggage

Just remember that Check-in for Jetstar closes 60 minutes before departure and won't let you check in past that.

Might be beneficial to try and get everything checked through and your boarding pass in KUL (although, per comments above, this is also probably not possible - but worth an ask). If your bag is sent to MEL but you don't have a Boarding pass, you may also run into an issue of not being able to collect your new boarding pass until that 3 hour window occurs and the Transfer desk opens.

Strictly speaking, the rules indicate that as you have separate tickets they won't tag the bags through to MEL.

However, JQ do provided for JQi-JQi transfers. See here: Connecting flights

I would ask at check-in; you may have some success.

Also note that as contract staff operate JQi check in, you may get a "no" on first request. So then ask to speak with the Jetstar supervisor/agent, as this person will understand how pull more strings in the JQ systems.
