SYD-HONG KONG VA, QF, SQ or CX!?

CX would be my choice due to:

- more flexible tickets
- more flights
- better service
- generally cheaper than QF

The only negative is less points if you have QF status.

The two times I have done it via SIN on SQ what you call a "refresher stop" has been a mad scramble between gates to catch the next leg. With carry-ons and security checks it's not worth the hassle (and the interruption in what could be an extended sleep). I would go for a direct flight - and have a bias towards CX for consistency of service - though QF380 has a nice homey feel, if you get a good cabin crew team.

While not wanting to talk down SQ here, if you're looking for a good night's sleep, also remember that HKG-SIN is around 3.5-4 hours (which will probably be early evening), then the change in Singapore, then only about 7 hours SIN-SYD. By the time you get up in the air, have something to eat, and then the reverse coming into SYD, you might manage 5-6 hours if you're lucky. Compare this with 8.5 to 9 hours HKG-SYD on QF/VS/CX and you've given yourself an extra couple of hours sleep (or same sleep and a few extra hours to enjoy J).

Refersher stop only works if you stay for at least 24 hours and spend a night in a hotel in town. I used to do it when I get free accomodation from SQ.

1. CX (schedule, schedule, schedule + New J)
2. QF
3. VS (go oneworld to get F lounges at both ends)

I've tried VS J on this route both ways and it was pretty good. I will give CX a go next and then maybe QF after that :) I won't go with SQ unless I am staying for a few nights in SIN :)
