I've seen the same extra costs with Virgin for flight on Etihad metal recently too. However they could be booking into a different fare class - so more status credits or baggage etc. (where applicable of course)

These would be one way fares not a true indication of anything as one way on OS fares are very poor value, but yes VA are more than HW in this case. QF return for March 1 are approx $200 more than HW.

Like 80 not selected.

Given that QF charge non-elites for seat selection and this is a leisure route, one would expect a large proportion of the leisure travellers would not buy the option of advance seat selection.

True - not quite fair but here are the return airfares for flights picked at random dates SYD-HNL Return on 06th Mar and return 20th Mar.

Yes for those that were looking to obtain/maximize their points and SC's even flying economy return - it gets more complex obviously.

Here the HA flights are booking into N & K class fares, the JQ flights are booking into Y class fares and would undoubtably have Bundle gouges to get SCs, the QF flights are O class fares and the VA codeshare on HA metal are booking into E and V class fares.
